Interested in DC Heroes? Then this mailing list is for you. Below are some of the more 'Frequently Asked Questions' (FAQ) about the mailing list. DISCLAIMER: This FAQ is a Copyright Joshua Marquart, 1995. The DC Heroes RPG is a copyright of Mayfair Games, and DC is a trademark of DC Comics. The owner of this FAQ does not contest ownership of any of either, nor the term 'superhero', which is a trademark held jointly by both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. This list is for discussing the DC Heroes Roleplaying game (DCH), published by Mayfair Games, but is now sadly out of print now. The DC-Heroes list was conceived by Joshua Marquart (known on the net (and off, to his chagrin) as Cheese), and is hosted by Kynn Bartlett, from his Netcom account. The mailing list was created for DCH gamers and GMs alike. On the list, people discuss their campaign ideas, post character statistic write-ups, rules, and campaigns, ask questions about how to handle certain situations and specific rules, and meet other DCH players. =========================== (2) What is DC Heroes RPG? =========================== Well, it's a game put out by Mayfair Games in the early 1980's (Pre-Crisis). It is a role playing game (RPG) where one plays a superhero (or villain), portraying either one of DC's line of characters or one of your own. The Gamemaster (GM) is given enough material to run the game in the contemporary DC Universe, though there are sourcebooks for the 1940's and 2995, and many GMs run their own gaming worlds. ====================================================== (3) Administrativa About the DC Heroes E-Mailing List ====================================================== HOW TO JOIN THE LIST: To leave or join the list, send email to: [m--r--o] at [idyllmtn.com] With a blank subject line and a body consisting of: subscribe dc-heroes Or unsubscribe dc-heroes Depending on what action you would like to perform. WHAT TO DO AFTER JOINING THE LIST: To send mail to everyone on the mailing list, send it to: [dc heroes] at [idyllmtn.com] If you have any more 'Technical' questions, send them to: Kynn Bartlett / [k--n] at [idyllmtn.com] =================================================== (4) What is the History of the DCH E-Mailing List? =================================================== Well, it began a long time ago (September, 1994). Cheese finally decided on a rules system to use to run his superhero campaign... DCH of course. So he went to a whole lot of conventions, beginning with Kettering CON in Ohio, and picked up a whole lot of DCH stuff.. but there wasn't anything new coming out, as Mayfair Games told him on the phone. So, Cheese figured, with a whole slew of questions, to bring his ideas and questions to the internet. In rec.games.frp.misc and rec.arts.comics.dc-universe, he posted quite a few DCH messages (which were subsequently drowned out by the volume of other posts, the major reason why he got r.g.f.super-heroes created =) ) and got some responses. Cheese didn't know who mentioned it, but someone asked if there was a mailing list for DCH, and he knew there wasn't so Cheese figured he'd start one, with what little 'net' knowledge he had. Cheese wrote up a list of people and would manually send the messages out, until, a few days later, he got a message from Kynn Bartlett. Kynn, who runs the DC Universe MUSH, suggested that he create a mailing list, and that Cheese become the 'official' greeter, sending a message to Kynn as to when to add a new person, and to pursue advertisement. This was the first real DCH mailing list, and it was a reflector list. Later, Kynn got sick of this process, and created a mentor-run list. This mentor list worked well (Cheese thinks it was the BEST incarnation) until it's server exploded or something and the lsit was deleted. Cheese chalks it up to the evil villain Majordomo. Kynn kept a small list of about 10 people with whom he conversed about creating the next list, and then made one on his Netcom account, adding and removing people himself. This got tedious, so he requested (and finally got) the netcom server we use today, which automatically adds and removes people, but occasionally eats mail sent to it. Just recently, Kynn got a new account at Idyll Mountain, and he cahanged us to one of their Majordomo lists. Hopefully this will be the last incarnation (as it IS the best at the moment). ========================================================== (5) What Can I Post and what Shouldn't I Post to the List? ========================================================== Appropriate topic of discussion for this list include: * New powers, skills, and rules for DC Heroes * New or updated DCH statistics for DC Universe characters * DCH statistics for non-DCU characters * Anecdotes and advice about playing or running DCH * Conversion tables between DCH and other roleplaying games * Announcements of the selling of DCH products * Addresses of Stores which still have DCH products Inappropriate topics include: * Commerical advertisements * Profanity and explicit sexual language * Personal attacks * Debates on why DCH is better/worse than some other game system * Debate/discussion on comic books in general * Statistics and rules for other superhero roleplaying games (e.g., Champions or Marvel Super-Heroes) * Blank messages (You know who you are =) ) If you're going to send large files, it's preferable to instead put them up for FTP or WWW access somewhere and send a pointer to the list directing readers where to find the files. (Cheese or Kynn could help you with FTP or WWW access, if needed.) ============================= (6) Is there a DCH FTP Site? ============================= Yes there is. You can get a TON of DCH files via anonymous FTP to: ftp.indirect.com in pub\rpg\DC\ This is the "Official" DC Heroes E-Mailing List Directory for DC and some other games. Get dclist.txt for more info. Very soon to be updated and revised. You can't post to the FTP site, as it's closed. Cheese has to send all new files to Britt Klein ([t--er--a] at [indirect.com]) who will add them to the directories. Cheese gets his files DIRECTLY from both the DCH Mailing List and rec.games.frp.super-heroes. He will not only post DCH related files, but he posts rules to other superhero games as well. To get something put on the FTP site, just send it to the mailing list. Cheese will wait for a few people to comment on it, and then will put in the 'upload to Britt' directory. The posting will get to the site eventually. ====================================================== (7) Are there any World Wide Web (WWW) sites for DCH? ====================================================== There is Cheese's Homepage (Which has the latest version of this FAQ) http://www.muohio.edu/~jdmarquart/rgfshfaq.html There is another FTP site with a whole bunch of DCH characters and pictures, but I cannot recall the site at the moment. ================================================= (8) Are there any MUDS or MUSHes for DCH Gaming? ================================================= Yes, there's Kynn's MUSH: DCU MUSH (short for DC Universe) -------------------------------- is a MUSH set in three different time zones: The Golden Age, the Modern Age, and the Future Age. Players can roleplay in 1942, 1995, or 2995, and can interact with such diverse characters as the Seven Soldiers of Victory, the Justice League of America, or the new Legion of Super-Heroes. Feature characters are available in all eras, and non-features are welcome in some. The Modern Age is currently under construction, but the Past and Future are wide open to visitors and comics fans. Come check us out at (or in leyman's terms: telnet to muds.okstate.edu 3333) =========================================================== (9) What are some Important E-Mail Addresses I should Know? =========================================================== Well, first off the Administration of the DCH List is: Kynn Bartlett ([K--n] at [Primenet.Com]) and Joshua Marquart (Cheese) ([j d marquart] at [miavx1.acs.muohio.edu]) Then there are people who worked on DCH: Mayfair Games ([m--f--r] at [aol.com]) They can still be reached at 1-800-4-DC-HERO Ray Winninger ([W--in--r] at [aol.com]) ================================================== (10) Who are some people that deserve some thanks? ================================================== Well, first off, I (Joshua Marquart) couldn't have written this FAQ without the help of my partner, Kynn Bartlett, without whom the DCH list might STILL be running off of my account. =) Thank you, Kynn. We'd like to thank Mayfair Games for publishing such a great game and DC Comics Inc for letting them. I just hope that someday DC will want to publish another game, and will ask Mayfair to do it again. (Mayfair gives out my E-Mail address when asked about DCH questions.) Thanks go out to Doug Tabb at Mayfair and Ray Winninger for helping out with a lot of DCH questions. Thanks to everyone who is on the DCH E-Mailing List and have taken the time to answer (or give their opinions of) or ask questions, or for just being there and lurking (You know who you are =) ). Thanks to the following people who've helped out with this FAQ: (Nobody as of yet) And a special thanks to my DCH Gaming group at Miami U., without whom I might not still be so interested in the game. ====================================================================== If anyone has any comments, or questions, or thinks I should add something to this FAQ, please send to me at : [j d marquart] at [miavx1.acs.muohio.edu] The FAQ is posted once a month (or whenever it's changed around) to r.g.f.s-h, and the latest version can be found at: http//www.muohio.edu/~jdmarquart/rgfshfaq.html Last Updated: 12/15/95 -- "WARNING: NONE OF THE UNDERLINED NAMES IN THIS PROGRAM SHOULD BE READ ALOUD, UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLETED COURSE #1271, PROTECTION FROM LESSER AND GREATER GODS." -Disclaimer from the _Cthulhu_ University Introductory Letter Joshua Marquart (aka Cheese) --- [j d marquart] at [miavx1.acs.muohio.edu] See Cheese's Homepage at http://www.muohio.edu/~jdmarquart
