He quit rather than was fired (at least that's how he tells it).

My local comic book store, "Comic Relief" in Berkeley, put out
three issues of a house magazine called "Boing!". In the second issue
they had an interview with Gaiman. This was back when "The Season of Mists"
was current, 1991. A while ago. Anyway, I quote:

"...I got a phone call from the newspaper, called _Today_, and
they said 'Well, you are our fantasy and science fiction correspondent,
and we want you to do a piece on Dungeons and Dragons.' I said 'Fair
enough.' They said, 'Well, great. Now what we want is an article showing
how it drives people mad and makes them use black magic and commit
suicide.' There was a vaguely incredulous pause on my side and I said
'Well, no!' They said, 'Why not?' I said, 'Well, because I'm not working
for you anymore,' and I put down the phone. That was really how I quit
journalism."
