A BRIEF HARASHAN VOCABULARY (PART 1 OF 3)

Dokariss The name given the smaller of the non-belligerent

starfaring ovoid creatures discovered to date.

Equivalent to calling a sea-going ship "The Dol-

phin". Humans refer to the dokariss as "space

               dolphins".

Kirisi Starskimmer.

T'Tarlich Tail-tickler. Refers to anything/one that might

be used for scratching/tickling the upper surface

of the tail base, or to anything/one doing so

               currently.

T'Tarlechen Tail-tickler. Refers to that which might be used

for tickling what lies beneath the tail. Usually

reserved for inanimate objects (sometimes used in

a derogatory form in referring to certain males).

Tarlechen Specific form of T'Tarlechen: a dildo.

Tartelchen Lover.

Sirichanlen Literally, "rider". A somewhat coarser term for

               sexual partner/lover than tartelchen, commonly

used when there is little or no emotional bond

               with the individual.

Ishardri Literally "partner". Used with a business assoc-

iate of long standing. Also used with a permanent

               or near permanent lover.

Shidra-Ko Ship-sister. Used among L'Drey females all from a

single ship. Equivalent to "countryman" or "fel-

low citizen". An honorific commonly used between

               equals.

Sidar-Ko "Freelady". Honorific commonly used male to fe-

male (subordinate to superior). A superior male

would most like use Shidra-Ko (ship-sister) with a

               subordinate female instead.

Shidra-Kas Ship-sisters. Indefinite number.

Shidra-Kan Ship-brother. Used female to male. Not typically

used subordinate to superior (female form used

instead by subordinate -- even if the superior is

male). Most commonly used male-to-male. Archaic.

Shidra Ship, singular.

Shirdan Ships, plural, unassociated, number uncertain.

Sokanshird One who is without a ship (polite form). Used to

describe one of the shipborne who is currently

without an independent starcraft. Commonly used

for (but not limited to) unemployed shipborne.

Sokanshiirda One who is forever without a ship. Used to de-

scribe one of the shipborne who has been exiled by

               her homeship.

Shidrala Ships, plural, associated in some fashion, number

               uncertain.

Shidran Ships, plural, unassociated, number known. Always

accompanied by an numeric modifier, as in Shidran-

               Tan (six ships).

Shidra-Lach "Master of ship"/Captain. Most Senior Officer.

Shidra-Sa "Master of ship". Owner. May also be captain.

Shidra-Salach "Master and owner aboard". VERY much V.I.P.

Obvious extensions of the above with Shidran (Shidran-Tan-Lach

for six ship force commander, Shidran-Tan-Sa for owner of a six

ship fleet, and Shidran-Tan-Salach for owner and senior officer

of a six ship fleet).

Numbers

               Nom Zero

   Akas One Sasvel Thirty-two

   Mirn Two Lirvel Forty

   Kol Three Tanvel Forty-eight

   Sas Four Kalvel fifty-six

   Lir Five Akasron sixty-four

Tan Six Mirnron one hundred twenty-eight

   Kal Seven etc...

Akasvel Eight Akaslo five hundred twelve

Mirnvel Sixteen Mirnlo one thousand twenty-four

   Kolvel Twenty-four etc...

         Akasvan four thousand ninety-six

Mirnvan eight thousand one hundred ninety-two

         etc...

Numeric Suffixes and their values

         vel x 8 tal x 32,768

         ron x 64 tan x 262,144

         lo x 512 ral x 2,097,152

         van x 4,096 an x 16,777,216

Adding k- to the suffix means "approximately", as in "akaskvel"

which means, "roughly eight" (i.e. might be seven, might be nine,

slight possibility of six or even ten). Somewhat context

dependent. For example, "mirnklo" might mean either roughly

1,024 (plus or minus two or three) or it might be used for any

number between akaslo (512) and kollo (1,536) depending upon

context.

Like their Altani cousins, the L'Drey use a base 8 number system.

Shirandal Ships, plural, refers to a coordinated group of

ships (as in a squadron or fleet). Number may or

               may not be specified.

Shirdan-Kas Ship-sisters of many ships gathered together,

number of ships and number of individuals unspeci-

fied, unassociated in any fashion save that of

their membership in the L'Dreyan race.

Shidran-Kas "The sisterhood of the ships: the people, and

their ships". Or, more loosely, the shipborne,

taken as a whole. The L'Dreyan name for them-

               selves as a race.

Sok'Nashir One who is without a ship throughout life. A

ground hugger. The polite term for non-L'Drey

(frequently used to refer to Altani in the more

               polite official L'Dreyan documents).

Salshirn Groundling. Coarse form. Commonly used to refer

to Altani only. Derogatory term. Not used in

               polite company.

Salshrina Groundling. Referring to non-Altani. Polite form.

Sish'Raina Groundling. Also used to refer to any sheep that

               is asking/needs to be fleeced.
