Although it is relevant to Hemp activists, if commerce bothers you please delete me now and hold yer flame-throwers. I make "HempRella," a natural cheese alternative made from 5% milled whole Hemp Seeds. It melts and shreds like cheese (even better), comes in "Jamaica Jack" flavor, is free of cholesterol, lactose, and trans-fatty acids, and is low in fat. It is profiled in the current (January) issue of High Times, page 10. Five-percent of our profits will be donated to N.O.R.M.L. The label is bold, with a prominent neon green leaf against a royal purple background. We will soon introduce "Hempeh Burgers," a version of tempeh burgers (an ancient Indonesian food made by fermenting soybeans...very savory) with 10% whole roasted hemp seeds and a special marinade. Again, the label has a prominent neon green leaf. Both products are high in essential fatty acids and complete protein, and are yummy delicious. We consider Hemp to be very different from Marijuana and our marketing reflects that (Hemp is Rope not Dope). Our next product will be a soft-serve non-dairy ice cream called "HempScream," slated for a summer introduction. These products are important to the movement because they are the first foods made from using Hemp Seeds in place of soybeans, and the first by an established, nationally-known food company, on the Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing companies, no less. But as pioneers we are finding many "arrows in our back." Most notably is the decision by the largest chain of natural food stores to ban HempRella from their shelves, and the largest chain of natural foods distributors to ban it from their warehouses. These decisions were made with zero input or information from us, and were made by lone souls in their corporate offices, both located in the heart of the Bible Belt. Those decisions are binding on stores and distributors in such hip areas as Berkeley, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, and Cambridge. The FDA has reviewed HempRella at the request of U.S. Department of Customs (we have it made in Vancouver BC), and merely shrugged their shoulders after reading the label. The product is legal, wholesome and safe, and the label is legal as well. (Yes, Hempella is as legal as Coca-Cola, as American as apple pie.) I believe that it is important for the movement that these products succeed. If they fail, Hemp Foods will be ignored by serious food companies for years to come. If they succeed, I know of many companies ready to put dozens of products on the shelf within a year, just waiting to see what happens with HempRella and Hempeh. Imagine being able to buy Hemp-based fresh and frozen entrees, beverages, desserts, baked goods, salad dressings, burgers, pizzas, and the like...all within the year. Imagine what kind of statement that will make for the Hemp movement. It would serve to remove the stigma in mainstream society attached to Hemp, and be very educational as well. It will herald an influx of new products in all segments of commerce, not just foods. Stores will be less paranoid selling Hemp-based clothing and body care products, and the overall (legal) Hemp economy would get a boost in dollars, influence, and awareness. Therefore, I feel alot is riding on these products. Sharon's Finest will continue either way. We made it to $3 million in sales and the Inc. 500 without Hemp Foods, so we don't need it to stay in business. But the Hemp movement stands alot to gain or lose. We've done the best job our 15 years' experience will allow in making a great product with a great package. We are contacting media and advertising and educating and writing. Now it's up to the public to let the retailers know whether or not they support a food made from Hemp Seeds. If you want to see Hemp Foods in your local store, tell them. If they need more information or the name of our distributor in their area, have them call us at 1-800-NJOY NOW (1-800-656-9669). Natural food stores, supermarkets in hip areas, hipper restaurants and pizza places, and prepared food manufacturers are all likely candidates for HempRella and Hempeh Burgers. We can provide you or them with signs, shelf-talkers, T-shirts, recipes, and a 2-page educational flyer entitled "Hemp Foods...Beyond the Soybean." Just call us at the number above. We can even produce special brochures for activists or stores...just ask! More about Sharon's Finest... It was started in 1987, and I (Richard Rose) am the Founder/CEO/President/Le Gran Fromage. Since 1980 I have developed, produced, and marketed dozens of soy-based foods, first as Brightsong Tofu, then Sharon's Finest. We were 1 of the "10 Most Innovative Food Companies" of 1985, according to Food and Beverage Marketing magazine. Currently we market TofuRella, TofuRella Slices, Zero-FatRella, AlmondRella, VeganRella, and now HempRella and Hempeh Burgers, with distribution in natural food stores and supermarkets throughout the U.S. and Canada, and some in Asia and Europe. We are seeking joint venture partners to produce and market these foods outside North America. Sharon's Finest is recognized by the trade and local press as an innovative, growing, model food company. Part of our Environmental Mission Statement calls for a "Green Tax," from which we have donated over $10,400 to Rainforest Action Network and Sierra Club of Western Canada for their work protecting rainforests. We expect to be a major contributor this year to EarthSave Foundation, which has endorsed our product VeganRella. Second Harvest Food Bank has received $84,000 in free food from us, and we buy our organic Brazil Nuts (for VeganRella) from Cultural Survival. We pioneered the first tofu-based cheese alternative, and the first versions that were fat-free, 100% non-dairy (Vegan), or made with almonds, brazil nuts, or hemp seeds. We are members of the National Nutritional Foods Association, International Hemp Association, and the Hemp Industry Association. I invite your inquiries or comments. Cheers, and thanks for reading this. RR ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Richard Rose of Sharon's Finest Healthy Alternatives P.O. Box 5020, Santa Rosa CA 95402-5020, U.S.A.
