American Medical Association Comments on Federal Trade Recommendation Regarding 'Old Joe' Advertising To: National Desk Contact: Dan Maier, of the American Medical Association 312-464-5382 WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 -- The following statement is by John L. Clowe, M.D., past president of the American Medical Association: We are extremely pleased and excited by the Federal Trade Commission's recommendations that "Old Joe" advertising be banned and hope the commissioners act with great haste. The real hero of this fight against "Old Joe" has been Surgeon General Novello who has supported the AMA's two-year alley fight to ban the addicted dromedary. Two years is far too long to wait for action, but better late than never. If the tobacco industry had any shred of humanity or sense of business ethics, "Old Joe" would have been set out in the desert back in 1991. Once again, the world has seen once again the true face of tobacco conglomerates. It is a ruthless face of greed, disease and addiction. -30- -- Nigel Allen, Toronto, Ontario, Canada [ae 446] at [freenet.carleton.ca]
