Reiter, an international authority on melatonin, answers the 10 most common questions about this antioxidant/hormone. Go to http://www.teleport.com/~jor Also, I thought this group might be interested in some facts about caffeine's effect on melatonin. A group of 25 volunteers who were given caffeine tablets equivalent to two cups of coffee had a significant reduction in blood levels of melatonin for the next eight hours. (a peak level of 14 pg/ml of melatonin when taking caffeine; 25 when not.) [Sleep Research 1995; 24:458 "Effects of caffeine, bright lights, and their combination on nighttime melatonin..." Wright,K.P et al.] If you drink coffee and are under bright lights, you will get an even greater reduction in melatonin levels. Taking supplemental melatonin will offset this effect.
