"We ID" Cards And Stickers To Prevent Alcohol Sales To Minors Soon To Be Available In Spanish To: National Desk Contact: Kirsten Fedewa of the Beer Institute, 202-737-2337 WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 -- Beer Institute, a national trade group for America's brewers, announced today that new "We ID" cards will soon be available in Spanish, Korean and English. The cards, first printed in English, are part of a successful program designed to help the nation's retailers guard against illegal sales to minors. Introduced in 1992 by Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA), the "We ID" series has been a popular program in helping to identify fake identifications, such as drivers' licenses, used by minors to purchase alcohol illegally. The cards will help educate retailers on how to properly recognize falsified identification. In addition, "We ID" stickers have been introduced to discourage potential underage drinkers from attempting to buy alcohol by alerting purchasers that the establishment requires proper identification and proof of age for alcohol sales. "The 'We ID' cards and stickers are part of the ongoing efforts of our nation's brewers to discourage underage drinking at the point-of-sale. We're trying to put the right tools into the hands of retailers to help them prevent underage customers from purchasing alcohol," said Raymond J. McGrath, Beer Institute president. "For the brewers -- and our wholesaler and retailer partners -- 21 means 21. We simply don't want underage business, period," said McGrath. According to McGrath, the "We ID" program has been so successful that additional languages -- particularly Spanish and Korean -- were requested to help primarily urban-based retailers communicate with their customers. All cards and stickers will be available by contacting Beer Institute in Washington, D.C. in early January, 1995. "On behalf of the brewers, I'd like to congratulate the hundreds of thousands of retailers for their hard work and success in discouraging illegal sales to minors at the point of sale. We look forward to continued work together as part of the solution in the fight against alcohol abuse," said McGrath. Beer Institute is the national trade organization for U.S. brewers and suppliers to the American brewing industry. Beer Institute's senior members include Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., Coors Brewing Company and Miller Brewing Company. -30- -- Nigel Allen [n--l--n] at [io.org]
