From: Jim Rosenfield <[j n r] at [igc.apc.org]> Newsgroups: talk.politics.drugs Date: 07 Sep 93 22:31 PDT Subject: Edwards drafts Hoover bill This morning I spoke with Michael Vagnucci, Aide to Congressman Don Edwards, who is Chairperson of the House Sub-committee on Civil and Constitutional Rights. He stated that Congressman Edwards is drafting a bill, which will be introduced soon, very much along the lines of the Hoover Institution Resolution. That resolution calls for an "objective commission" to re-examine our present drug policies and to make recommendations. I expect to receive a copy of the draft legislation by September 14th or so. He asked me to communicate the following request to drug policy reform leaders whom I know, "Please examine your database resources for a reachable likely constituency who might contact there representatives and ask them to cosponsor this legislation". This might include signatories of the Resolution along with all kinds of membership and subscription lists. Such lists must include name and fairly recent addresses, as a minimum. Please let me know what you have along these lines. Additional information about these records, such as phone numbers, fax numbers and demographic data could become very useful in a campaign to pass this legislation and build a constituency for the Objective Commission. It may be the case that someone among the "drug policy reform community" has thought all this through or has taken steps to lay the groundwork for such a campaign. If so, please let me know so I can sign on. If not, who is for organizing a committee in support of action to realize the recommendations of the Hoover Institution Resolution? Yours truly; Jim Rosenfield cc: Edwards, Gray, Schaffer, Hoover Institute, LANORML, CANORML, National NORML, DPF, and others. -------------------------------------------------------------- Jim Rosenfield Peacenet: [j n r] at [igc.org] tel: 213-836-0926 Compuserve: 72341,3027 off: 213-721-5525 ext.300 fax: 213-722-6642 Please let me know when you read this.
