The measure drew majority support from voters of all parties, political persuasions, geographical areas, ethnic groups and ages, being strongest among Northern Californians, Democrats, liberals, blacks, and those in their forties, and weaker among conservatives, Republicans, Southern Californians and Latinos. By a 63%-32% margin, respondents opposed the suspension of drivers' licenses for possession of marijuana for non-driving offenses, as called for by Gov. Wilson's "Smoke A Joint, Lose Your License" law. Only 22% of voters favored legalizing the possession and use of marijuana by adults for all purposes, versus 76% opposed, showing that voters clearly distinguish between full-scale legalization and more moderate measures to allow medical use and avoid excessive punishment.
