I've read about this in the book 'Cannabis in Amsterdam' by A.C.M Jansen. The author suggests that a test by dr. Tashkin from 1987 has shown that marijuana smoke is worse for the lungs than tobacco smoke. The report is mentioned as: Tashkin, D.P., A.H. Coulson, V.A. Clark et al. (1987), 'Respiratory symptoms and lung function in habitual heavy smokers of marijuana alone, smokers of marijuana and tobacco, smokers of tobacco alone, and nonsmokers', in 'American Review of Respiration Diseases', Jrg. 135, pp 209-216. This is all I know about it. I haven't read the report myself. If any reader has access to it, I would welcome more details about it. BTW, please keep in mind that the average MJ smoker smokes much less than the average tobacco smoker. And MJ has never caused a known case of lung cancer.
