From: [g t sc] at [poug01.nor.chevron.com] (Greg Schorr) Organization: Chevron Just thought I would pass on some data I came across while going through some old issues of JAMA. I think these data are a good indication of just how warped our governments priorities are. # preventable deaths Federal expenditures on prevention Illicit Drugs ~11,000 ~$12,090,000,000 AIDS ~37,000 ~$2,400,000,000 Alcohol ~100,000 ~$278,000,000 Tobacco ~425,000 ~$330,000,000 Tobacco deaths include both active and passive smoking. Source: March 2, 1994 JAMA p. 660. I also came across the June 1, 1994 issue of JAMA in my wanderings. I will follow up with more if anyone is interested. Maybe I should also add that I took the data off a graph from a letter to the editor from Mr. Stanton A. Glantz, PhD. The graph was produced in turn with data from a 1993 article in JAMA and from the federal budget for 1994-5 expenditures for research presentation and education. The deaths are from 1989 and, as far as I can tell, the budget numbers are from 1994-5. Greg Schorr --- * Origin: COBRUS - Usenet-to-Fidonet Distribution System (1:2613/335.0)
