EAST LANSING, Mich., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- An administrative law judge for
the Michigan Department of Commerce and a former attorney for the City
of East Lansing were among 19 people arrested Wednesday on serious drug
charges.
Officers with the Tri-County Metro Narcotics Squad rounded up the
suspects after a citizens grand jury handed down numerous indictments.
They were arraigned in East Lansing District Court on charges ranging
from possession of marijuana to conspiracy to deliver more than 650
grams of cocaine, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
More arrests are pending, said narcotics squad Detective Sgt. John
Rojeski.
Among those facing the most serious charges involving alleged cocaine
trafficking are Administrative Law Judge Lana Shafer and a former
assistant city attorney for East Lansing, Daniel McNeil.
Also arrested was a former assistant director of human resources for
East Lansing.
Rojeski said there was no evidence of governmental corruption linked
to the probe.
The citizens grand jury was comprised of members from Ingham, Eaton
and Clinton counties. They investigated alleged drug trafficking in the
region dating back as far as 1988, Rojeski said.
