A FOAF tried Gatorade once and really freaked out. After
downing a bottle of the stuff, he waited for the effects. Within
*minutes*, he was unable to detect any sensation of thirst.
Not used to having his thirst quenched so quickly (he normally drank water),
he became convinced that his thirst mechanism was permanently damaged.
I tried to talk him down--saying that the suppression of thirst was only
temporary--but he couldn't think rationally. He was sure that he would
never have the desire to drink again and would consequently die of
dehydration. I drove him back to his house. Once we got inside, I
turned down the lights and played Dark Side of the Moon in order to calm
him down. In a couple of hours, his thirst slowly returned. He has not
been quite the same since.

My friend got the Gatorade at 7-11, where I have since heard that they
put strychnine in the formula. Another friend who knows about these
things told me that the strychnine is needed to bind the added
electrolytes to the water molecules.
