Subject: FBI Agent Arrested With Stolen Ammo/Explosives
Date: Mon, 18 Dec 1995 13:37:55 GMT

FBI Agent Gary Harlow, 48, was a 25 year veteran and a firearms
instructor at the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia. On
Saturday, December 9, 1995, Fauqier County police say Harlow got
into a domestic argument and allegedly beat his wife. Mrs.
Harlow fled the couple's house with a broken nose, bruises, and
a chipped tooth. While being treated in at the hospital at
Fairfax county Mrs. Harlow revealed that her husband had
stockpiled large amounts of military type equipment.
Investigation by the local sheriff revealed that Harlow had
stolen more than 100,000 rounds of ammunition, night-vision
goggles, grenades, holsters, tear gas and explosives from the
FBI Academy. Some of the seized ammunition was still in its
original boxes, with shipping labels addressed to the FBI
academy, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. Distict Court.
Harlow avoided capture by fleeing his residence and was
alledeged to have set his house on fire later. Harlow was
charged with arson and appeared before a Magistrate on Thursday,
Dec. 14th and ordered to be held without bail. On Friday, Dec.
15, Federal Magistrate Judge W. Curtis Sewell overturned that
ruling and ordered Harlow released pending a mental health
evaluation. However, Judge Sewell suspended that order for 72
hours so prosecutors could appeal if they wish.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Bellows said that Harlow is a
dangerous and unstable man. "What he kept in his house was an
arsenal," said Bellows, who wanted Harlow kept without bond.
Bellows said that Harlow was arrested with loaded assault
weapons in his car and had more than 30 powerful firearms at his
Fauquier county home. FBI spokesman Susan Lloyd stated that
Agent Harlow was fired on Wednesday night after FBI agents
questioned him in Warrenton, Va., where he was arrested.
