Smith Jr. faces dozens of microphones outside the federal courthouse as he answers questions Thursday about the Branch Davidian trial." Photo description - Judge Smith stands at ease, with one hand in his pocket, as he faces a large number of reporters. In the note to U.S. District Judge Walter S. Smith Jr., jurors said they expected to deliberate Saturday and would decide then whether they wanted to deliberate Sunday, according to Jo Simpson, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshals Service. The note also said jurors would like to decide each day if they want to continue beyond 5 p.m., which is about the time they have been excused for the day by Smith, who makes the final deci- sions. However, jurors did indicate to the judge they would like to be excused no later than 4 p.m. Saturday, Simpson said. Thursday was the second day of deliberations by the eight- woman, four-man jury and the first full day. Jurors received the case Wednesday and deliberated for two hours and 15 minutes. Deliberations resumed at 9 a.m. Thursday and continued until about 4:45 p.m. The jury took a lunch break, but apparently ordered food brought into the federal courthouse. The 11 defendants face several charges, including conspiracy to murder agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire- arms. Four agents were killed during a raid at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco last Feb. 28. Eighty-one members of the reli- gious sect, including leader David Koresh, died as fire destroyed the compound, ending a 51-day siege. Thursday was the birthday of defendant Clive Doyle of Austra- lia, who turned 53. The jury selected as its foreman a 46-year-old woman teacher, Simpson said. Names and addresses of jurors have not been revealed, by order of Smith, and will remain secret at least until the trial ends, Simpson said. Ages, race, gender and occupation have been released, however. There are nine Hispanics and three Anglos. Ages range from 21 to 80. The other occupations are bookkeeper, title clerk, retired banker, medical secretary, grounds foreman, nurse, retired teacher, insurance adjustor, custodian, file clerk and leather inspector. At Smith's order, jurors are sequestered overnight. At the end of deliberations Thursday, they spent a third night at an unknown location. Smith left his chambers briefly Thursday and spoke with re- porters outside the federal courthouse. He said the trial, in its seventh week, has been difficult for him and the jury, but he expressed confidence the jury will meet its obligation. "There's just a lot of stress involved in any kind of trial involving 11 defendants," Smith said. "(The jurors) are a very dedicated group of people. They recognize the importance of this case." Asked to predict how long deliberations will take, he said: "I gave up trying to guess how long juries will take or what they are going to decide years ago." Smith said he feels "a little more relaxed" now that the case is in the hands of the jurors. The jury was scheduled to resume deliberations at 9 a.m. Friday. ========================= ADMINISTRIVIA ========================= KNOWN DISTRIBUTIONS USENET: talk.politics.guns, alt.politics.org.batf, alt.conspiracy, alt.politics.usa.misc & alt.politics.libertarian - author USENET: info.firearms.politics/mailing list Firearms Politics ([firearms politics] at [ns1.rutgers.edu]) - author Other networks - BIX: tojerry/inquest - Paul L.
