Amusing new URL on the WorldWideWeb under the U.S. Treasury:

It's interesting that in the BATF mission statement, the very first thing
is ... well ... you can read it below.  I wonder just what was changed in
July of 1994...?

Mission statement:
The mission of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF)
is: to reduce the criminal use of firearms and to assist other
Federal, State, local and foreign law enforcement agencies in
reducing crime and violence by effective enforcement of the Federal
firearms laws; to provide for the public safety by reducing the
criminal misuse of explosives, combating arson-for-profit schemes,
and removing safety hazards caused by improper and unsafe storage
of explosives materials; to assure the collection of all alcohol,
tobacco, and firearms tax revenues and obtain a high level of
compliance with the alcohol, tobacco, and firearms tax statutes; to
suppress the commercial bribery, consumer deception, and other
prohibited trade practices in the alcoholic beverage industry by
effective enforcement and administration of the Federal Alcohol
Administration Act; to assist the States in their efforts to
eliminate interstate trafficking in the sale and distribution of
contraband cigarettes; to actively target and investigate those
individuals who possess or use firearms in furtherance of their
illegal narcotics/drug related activities; and, to suppress illicit
manufacture and sale of nontaxpaid alcoholic beverages.
