If you are done, you can exit the ftp program by typing: quit 16. The computer responds with: ftp> quit 221 Goodbye. 17. If you have retrieved files previously, and want to see what new files have been added, complete steps 1-6 above (you don't need to repeat them if you are still in the ftp program), and type: ls -latr This produces a listing of the files in ascending time order, from earliest to latest: ftp> ls -latr 200 PORT command successful. 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls. total 516 -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1018 Aug 9 18:34 haiti.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 2477 Aug 9 18:34 health.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1201 Aug 9 18:34 yugo2.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1989 Aug 9 18:34 yugo.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1674 Aug 9 18:34 yeltsi.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 21922 Aug 9 18:34 wsb.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 3065 Aug 9 18:34 wjc_bio.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 14055 Aug 9 18:34 wharto.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 19211 Aug 9 18:34 urban.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1176 Aug 9 18:34 unempl.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 12153 Aug 9 18:34 uaw.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 7532 Aug 9 18:34 texas.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 6328 Aug 9 18:34 super.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 810 Aug 9 18:34 trade1.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 7192 Aug 9 18:34 stloui.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 6112 Aug 9 18:34 sacram.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 208 Aug 9 18:34 religion.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 13488 Aug 9 18:34 rainbo.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 25709 Aug 9 18:34 platfo.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 12213 Aug 9 18:34 plat_2.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 15237 Aug 9 18:34 plat_1.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 955 Aug 9 18:34 offices.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 2342 Aug 9 18:34 nobel1.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 13107 Aug 9 18:34 nbc.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 17478 Aug 9 18:34 nam.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 9898 Aug 9 18:34 mayors.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 9799 Aug 9 18:34 lulac.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1011 Aug 9 18:34 la.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 2232 Aug 9 18:34 logfile.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 815 Aug 9 18:34 license.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 4205 Aug 9 18:34 letter.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 4705 Aug 9 18:34 lagrange.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 8052 Aug 9 18:34 hillar.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 818 Aug 9 18:34 iraq.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 14183 Aug 9 18:34 dlc.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 6435 Aug 9 18:34 defens.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 3649 Aug 9 18:34 index.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 13427 Aug 9 18:34 gtown.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 7673 Aug 9 18:34 gorems.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1037 Aug 9 18:34 gorebos.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 16785 Aug 9 18:34 foreig.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 6669 Aug 9 18:34 flynn.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1495 Aug 9 18:34 fetal.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 12040 Aug 9 18:34 family.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 3349 Aug 9 18:34 evergr.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 11356 Aug 9 18:34 enviro.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 15665 Aug 9 18:34 educat.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1425 Aug 9 18:34 educ07.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 19153 Aug 9 18:34 econ.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 6900 Aug 9 18:34 east.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 6071 Aug 9 18:34 crime.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 12125 Aug 9 18:34 bcmsg.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 10867 Aug 9 18:34 aarp.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 17648 Aug 9 18:34 clinton.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1612 Aug 9 18:34 choice.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 3275 Aug 9 18:34 china.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 1266 Aug 9 18:34 bpw.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 2567 Aug 9 18:34 bosnia.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 952 Aug 9 18:34 bhulsey.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 465 Aug 9 18:34 address.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 3773 Aug 9 18:34 bcheal.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 12507 Aug 9 18:34 arseni.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 11794 Aug 9 18:34 anpa.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 16806 Aug 9 18:34 amsecur.txt.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 3 21 999 Aug 9 18:34 africa.txt.Z drwxr-sr-x 4 3 21 512 Aug 10 23:18 .. drwxr-sr-x 2 3 21 1536 Aug 10 23:20 . 226 Transfer complete. remote: -latr 4579 bytes received in 16 seconds (0.28 Kbytes/s) ftp> 18. By looking at the date, you can determine which new files have been added, and then retrieve the ones you wish to retrieve by using the "mget" command described above. 19. After you have exited the ftp program, you now need to decompress the files you have retrieved. To do this, first make sure you are still in the proper directory. Then run the uncompress program: uncompress This will uncompress the selected files. You may then print out the desired files, or view them on your screen. 20. Good luck, and thanks for your support! ----------------End of ftp.uu.net discussion------------
