========================================================================
Here are instructions for reaching the Clinton/Gore Library:

The following directions should enable anyone connected to the Internet
to retrieve the files on ftp.uu.net that are copied from the directory
maintained by Barry Shein at world.std.com.

0. Login to your system, and change directories to the directory where
you will be storing the files you download. If you need to, create
a directory to hold the files:

        mkdir Clinton-Gore<RETURN>
        cd Clinton-Gore<RETURN>

1. FTP (run the "ftp" program) to ftp.uu.net (137.39.1.9). If you can't
access this machine, contact your system administrator. Type:

        ftp -i ftp.uu.net<RETURN>

Or, if that doesn't work, then type:

        ftp -i 137.39.1.9<RETURN>

If that still doesn't work, see your system administrator.

2. The machine (ftp.uu.net) will respond with something like:

Connected to ftp.uu.net
220 ftp.UU.NET FTP server (Version 6.30 Mon Jul 27 14:07:35 EDT 1992) ready.
Name (ftp.uu.net:<your login name>):

3. Type "anonymous" and hit the RETURN key. Your screen should look like:

Connected to ftp.uu.net
220 ftp.UU.NET FTP server (Version 6.30 Mon Jul 27 14:07:35 EDT 1992) ready.
Name (137.39.1.9:<your login name>): anonymous
331 Guest login ok, send e-mail address as password.

4. Here, type in your e-mail address as your password, and hit RETURN. The
remote computer will not echo the characters you type in. Your screen
     should look like:

9. The list you see is the list of all available files. The ".txt" indicates
that the files are in ASCII text form. (Actually, the files are in DOS
text form.) The ".Z" on the end of each file indicates that the files are
compressed using the UNIX "compress" utility. To receive compressed files,
you first have to tell FTP that you are transferring binary files. Type:

        type binary<RETURN>

10. The computer responds with:

        ftp> type binary
        200 Type set to I.
        ftp>

11. Now, make sure that you are in the desired directory on your machine. Type

        lcd .<RETURN>

12. The computer responds with:

        ftp> lcd .
Local directory now <your current directory>
        ftp>

13. Now, select the files you wish to retrieve. Type:

mget <list of filenames, separated by spaces><RETURN>

To get all of the files, type:

        mget *

You can also use patterns, such as "yugo*" to get all files whose names
    begin with "yogo".

14. The computer responds with:

ftp> mget china.txt.Z yugo*

15. There! Your files are now transferred. If you wish to retrieve any
more files, you can retrieve them now by specifying the file names. If
you are done, you can exit the ftp program by typing:

        quit<RETURN>

16. The computer responds with:

        ftp> quit
        221 Goodbye.
        <your machine prompt>

17. If you have retrieved files previously, and want to see what new files have
been added, complete steps 1-6 above (you don't need to repeat them
if you are still in the ftp program), and type:

        ls -latr

This produces a listing of the files in ascending time order, from earliest
    to latest:

ftp> ls -latr
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.

18. By looking at the date, you can determine which new files have been
added, and then retrieve the ones you wish to retrieve by using the
    "mget" command described above.

19. After you have exited the ftp program, you now need to decompress the
files you have retrieved. To do this, first make sure you are still in
the proper directory. Then run the uncompress program:

uncompress <list of filenames, use *.Z for all><RETURN>

This will uncompress the selected files. You may then print out the
desired files, or view them on your screen.

20. Good luck, and thanks for your support!
