Mike Wallace and Bob Woodward were at a loss to name any other President who could have been spoken to by his Vice President in such a manner. The new book by Bob Woodward presents a White House in chaos with the President given to indecision, whining at legislators for votes and frequent outbursts of rage. Hillary is portrayed as the de facto Chief of Staff. Woodward got everyone to talk about everyone else to an incredible extent and nothing is being refuted at this point. (I will provide a complete review of the book in the next couple of weeks.) North Korea A nuclear shell game continues with the Stalinist leader of North Korea. What is almost certain is that they have diverted sufficient quantities of plutonium to create at least one nuclear bomb. Now what needs to be decided is the appropriate response. The most likely response will be economic sanctions. When it appeared that a nuclear bomb was being constructed, Washington said it would not allow North Korea to become a nuclear power. The White House than said that a bomb or two might not qualify them as a nuclear force. Clinton in Europe The Presidents trip is marked mainly by events commemorating D-Day and visits with World War II allies. One of the running themes of the American press is the irony of the draft avoiding President commemorating servicemen who died in battle. Many of the generation that fought World War II are unable to comprehend a person avoiding military service and have not come to terms with Clinton in this area. The White House is mindful of this perception and has planned a fairly low key public schedule. A very short speech is planned for the Normandy Beach event. One stop on the Presidents will be the Vatican where the Pope will discuss abortion and an upcoming conference on population control. Dan Rostenkowski The legislator who arrived in Washington 35 years ago and built more power in the House than almost anyone was indicted on Monday with 17 counts including misuse of public funds and hiring ghost employees. "Federal prosecutors threaten to indict me if I fail to plead guilty to a series of crimes I did not commit. I will not make any deals with them," Rosty said defiantly turning down a plea bargain that would have forced him to resign and spend 6 months in jail. The indictment is a blow to the Presidents Health plan and other domestic plans but not a fatal ones. Notes In a move marking the end of the cold war both the US and Russia stopped pointing missles at one another...Advertising is beginning for the Presidents domestic Peace Corps program called AmeriCorp. The ads show the President walking across the White House Lawn with a group of young people, all inexplicably clapping hands...The government's chief economic forecasting gauge was flat in April... Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders:"I saw [Clinton] recently, and he congratulated me on what I've been doing. He said, "I keep up with you by everywhere you go and what you've been doing... I love it."... Copyrightc1994 by The Presidential Weekly. All rights reserved. The Presidential Weekly is published by Thomas Clary Martin 22701 Cypress Street Torrance, CA 90501.
