On Saturday, July thirtieth, the San Diego Militia transitioned from a mere idea into a drilling militia. After three months of preparation, recruiting, and organization, militia volunteers participated in the militia's first military style drill. Among the volunteers were veterans from the Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. Most of the volunteers brought rifles, while some brought wooden sticks. The drill began with a letter of support from Bruce Henderson, a Republican candidate for State Assembly. Then, the assembled volunteers received an account of recent media attention (see "Media Attention", page 2.) After a brief business meeting, the volunteers were instructed in firearms safety by Gunnery Sergeant Greg Allen. Afterward, the militia began military style parade drill training, directed by Major Rod Van Orden. The unit learned saluting, facing movements, close order marching, half-step, and column movements, with and without rifles. Our Chaplain, Glenn Arrant, reminded us that he is available to militia volunteers 24 hours a day. He can be reached at: (h) 619-445-5952 and (w) 619-445-7307 Pancake Breakfast Linda Thompson has called for an armed march on Washington in September, in order to "arrest" members of Congress. The San Diego Militia is actively discouraging participation in this unlawful and ill-considered event. At the last business meeting, members unanimously voted to condemn this outrageous scheme. As an alternative, the San Diego Militia will be hosting a pancake breakfast a day or two before the "armed march." All San Diego congressional candidates will be invited, as well as most other county candidates for office. The purpose will be to provide a peaceful alternative to Thompson's call for violence, thereby providing a positive image for militia volunteers. All proceeds will go to the San Diego Militia's "Project Streetwise", which helps San Diego's homeless population by providing self employment opportunities. Corporal Dion Clark is in charge of the affair. If you have any experience in putting together a pancake breakfast, or if you want more information, please contact him. Color Guard for October 22 Rally On October 22, there will be a gun-rights rally in La Mesa. The San Diego Militia will be supplying a color guard, and will provide a "21 gun salute" for the Bill of Rights reading ceremony. We need dedicated marchers, a fife player, and a snare drum player. Current color guard members are Gunnery Sgt. Greg Allen, Cpl. Angela Allen, Cpl. Lynn Badler, Cpl. Karen Shein, Cpl. Rick Berger, Sgt. John Wallner, and Major Rod Van Orden. The color guard will be meeting weekly, for two hours on Wednesday evenings, in Clairmont. Color guard members will have to buy their own uniforms, which could cost up to $150.00. If you are interested in being in the color guard, please call and let us know. In addition to the color guard appearance, the entire militia has been invited to march in the rally parade. Please mark October 22 on your calendar, and plan to attend. 1776 Minuteman Clothing Committee Uniforms requirements remain a big issue for the San Diego Militia. Many volunteers are of limited means, and cannot afford to purchase expensive uniforms. Several types of uniforms are anticipated. For special events and parades, we would like to have uniforms reflective of the various periods of our history, such as 1776 minuteman uniforms, Civil War attire, WWI "dough-boy" uniforms, and modern gulf-war dress. Women may also dress in period female attire. The 1776 Minuteman Clothing Committee has been formed to look into acquiring appropriate uniforms at reasonable prices. Their mission includes acquiring 1776 era uniforms, period uniforms from the major U.S. wars, and appropriate modern militia parade and drill utilities. Current members in the clothing committee are Cpl. Angela Allen, Cpl. Rick Berger, Cpl. Karen Shein, and B.J. Coleman. If you have any ideas, or would like to help, contact Angela Allen. Fundraising We're broke, and expenses are mounting. John Wallner has been paying for all expenses out of his own pocket, but this can't continue. Please contribute what you can. Send checks to "San Diego Militia", P.O. Box 12361, La Jolla, Ca. 92039. Thanks. Recent Media Attention The San Diego Militia has been the object of some mainstream media scrutiny. The Los Vegas Review-Journal gave the SDM positive publicity in an article by Vin Suprynowicz. KOGO's Peter Weisbach had President John Wallner on his radio talk show for 30 minutes, with very good results. The Daily Californian recently ran an editorial critical of the San Diego Militia. President John Wallner has submitted a rebuttal. Most of these articles will be included in future newsletter issues. (Electronic version: these Daily Californian articles are appended at the end of the newsletter.) [I left out the Daily Californian editorial, and Wallner's response to it, because I just posted them here last week. Please inquire if you missed them and want a copy. --JM] Instructions for Drill (READ CAREFULLY) You may bring your parade rifle, even if you have not completed your firearms safety class. However, you must NOT bring any ammunition. Also, leave your bolt (or firing assembly) at home. Do NOT bring a fully assembled rifle. Be sure to transport your rifle in a LOCKED CONTAINER. The trunk of your car is NOT sufficient -- if you do not have a LOCKED CONTAINER, then leave your rifle at home. Bring a broomstick instead. You should also bring: a hat of some sorts, sun block, boots, fluids, and a bag lunch. You will be asked to sign a disclaimer of liability when you arrive. (This is a requirement of the hosts' homeowner's insurance.) Next Meeting Our next drill is noon to 4:00Pm on Saturday, August 27. Normally, our drills are on the third Saturday of every month, but August's drill has been delayed a week in order to accommodate a militia presence at the Miramar Air Show on the 20th. Subsequent drills will be on the third Saturday of the month, unless preempted by a special event. The location is 904 Tierra Del Sol Rd., Boulevard Ca. 91905 (The same location as last drill.)
