Over fifty people attended. The attendees discussed goals, activities, legal considerations, organization, and membership requirements. Twenty six people volunteered on the spot. Our mailing list now has the names of 67 volunteers. And applications for membership are still coming in! Officers Appointed The corporate officers of the San Diego Militia were appointed and approved at the last meeting. They are: President: John Wallner Vice President: Richard Rider Recruiting / Safety: Bruce Skane Secretary: Rod Van Orden Treasurer: Keith Skane Militia Organization Eventually, the San Diego Militia will be organized as a not-for-profit corporation. Like all corporations, we will have an elected board of directors, who in turn appoint the corporate officers (i.e., President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). Volunteers will carry a Marine Corps rank, ranging from Private to General. Volunteers with military experience will hold their last paid rank plus one. Volunteers with no military experience hold the rank of Corporal. Last minute volunteers will hold the rank of Private, or Private First Class. This structure allows for graceful accommodation of last minute volunteers, while maintaining the chain of command. Nationwide Contacts In addition to the San Diego Militia, there are other groups of citizen's militias springing up around the country. The San Diego Militia communications committee has made contact with new or existing militias in Santa Cruz, Illinois, Sacramento, Columbus, and Oregon. A Place to Drill We are still looking for a place to drill. We have tried to get a permit to drill in Balboa Park, but it has been difficult due to a recently passed city ordinance banning firearms from parks and "open spaces." Eventually, we still hope to obtain the necessary permits. In the meantime, we need a place to practice our parade style military drill. If you know of an available large open space that is centrally located, please let us know. A parking lot or large yard would suffice. Meeting With the Sheriff John Wallner, the organizer of the San Diego Militia, had a brief meeting with San Diego Sheriff Jim Roache at the end of May. Wallner explained the structure and goals of the Militia to Sheriff Roache, and gave him copies of the group's literature. The Sheriff reacted positively -- he wished the SDM good luck in achieving its goals, and gave assurance that so long as the SDM remained law abiding, there is nothing to fear from the Sheriff's department. As most of you know, Jim Roache was voted out of office on June 7. Wallner will be contacting Bill Kolendar (the new Sheriff), and the chief of the San Diego Police. July 2 Rally in Sacramento There will be a firearms rights rally in Sacramento, Ca., on July 2. Activities start at 9:00AM.
