#Well, it doesn't prove that hunting is the limiting factor to gun
#ownership, but I'd like to challenge Ralphie to show me where the HELL
#this "well regulated militia" is. There IS no "well-regulated" about
#the conservative love affair with the Second Amendment. The byword of
#the gun lobby is, "Deregulation, whatever the cost in human life."

Not sure what this is doing in soc.men, but.............

Boy, doncha jes love it when people discuss the history of firearms
who don't know either history or firearms?

The word rule has another meaning besides a law. Its original
meaning also includes a piece of equipment for ensuring that lines
are straight.

Likewise, to "regulate" a firearm in colonial times meant to make sure
the sights were accurately aligned so that you HIT what you aim at.
A "well regulated" militia meant one whose firearms were accurate and
in good working order, as no general wants to field a soldier whose
body count is mostly trees just to the left of a British/Federalist soldier.

In later years, the term "regulate" came to mean adjusting or controlling
any machine to make it more accurate or just plain better. Congresscritters,
many of whom were and remain avid shooters and hunters, co-opted the term
and passed "regulations" to make government more accurate and just plain
better. As usual, they achieved the opposite.

The Constitution is more than an historical document; it is the
contract between WE THE PEOPLE and those we allow to govern us.
One of the ways the government tries to "cheat" is to wait until
the definition of the word changes, then use that change to redefine
what the Constitution obligates them to do, usually in favor of their own
interests. That's not a valid method of amendment at all, in my book.

The original intent of the 2nd amendment was to provide a means for
WE THE PEOPLE to hold abusive government in check. The Declaration of
Independance recognized that throughout history, ALL government evolves
towards totalitarianism and oligarchy, and Thomas Jefferson strove to
delay that as long as possible within the democratic experiment he was
conducting (although he himself never expected the U.S. to last as
long as it has, even with such safeguards).

 Consider these:

The GoverMedia deliberatly confuses the image of the semi-automatic
weapon with a fully automatic versions. The fully automatic versions are
ALREADY illegal, and carry a 15 year prison sentence for merely possessing
the unassembled parts. Yet, these guns still are on the streets, despite
the laws. That tells you that even U.S. gun control does NOT stop the
criminals.

Assault weapons, the primary type being banned, are great for
fighting revolutions and exercising the 2nd amendment option against
abusive government. Contrary to the media hype, less than 3 percent of
all gun crime involves the use of assault style weapons, yet it is
these specific weapons, best suited to a modern civil war, that
clearly most worries the government.

Between "pepper spray", mace and the general discrediting of hunting,
we are being "socialized" to believe that there is no "legitimate"
use for personal firearms.

Arguments like the above posters are being promoted to socialize us
to believe that there is no "legitimate" right to arm oneself
against the government; that only government "regulated" weapons
are legitimate.

The anti-gun lobby is well funded from mostly anonymous sources.

The last 6 elections, WE THE PEOPLE sent to Washington politicians who
promised "No New Taxes" and every damned one of them did the opposite
of what WE THE PEOPLE told them to do. That means they do not represent our
interests. That means we are being taxed without representation. That
the government is trying to find ANY means to disarm us means they KNOW
they have lost the moral right to govern us and are already preparing
for the coming civil war.

Personally, I think assault weapons are ugly, and I don't like them.
(I am a black powder and flintlock kinda guy). But all things considered,
I may have to change that. After all, according to Title 10 of the United
States Code, I am the part of the militia, and it is my Constitutional
obligation to own a fighting weapon with the best damn sights I can afford.
If I DON'T, then I am failing to keep my side of the contract!

There are two things happening here in Los Angeles which underscore
the preparations for civil war.

1. All federal offices have recently been clustered together in a new
area near the harbor freeway. All streets have been re-routed so that
approach to this Federal enclave is limited to one of two easily
defended approaches. The streets that survice this little island in
the sky are on high pylons, well above the main city streets below.
Although subtle, it is clear that the plan for this area was drawn up
with military considerations in mind.

2. There is now underway a program to mount TV cameras on top on
streetlights in "trouble zones" (The same ones the LA city council
wants to put "stop and search" checkpoints around). These cameras,
(three of which are visible along Highland Avenue between Hollywood
Blvd and the Hollywood Bowl) keep an eye on us gun toting disloyal
special effects types. Recall when the assasination of the Yugoslav
dictator Chouchesku(sp) was condoned because he was using TV cameras
to watch the general population?
