Firearm Certificate Statistics, England and Wales, 1993

Official Home Office Figures 19 August 1994

year end of 31 December.

Main Points:

	- At the end of 1993, 138,400 firearm certificates were on issue,
an increase of one per cent on the 136,800 on issue at the end of 1992.

	- 1.1 per cent of 10,900 applications for new firearm certificates
were refused, a smaller proportion than in previous years.

	- 691,100 shot gun certificates were on issue at the end of 1993.
This is the lowest number since 1971, and more than 20 per cent fewer
than the 882,000 on issue in 1988.

	- 1.4 per cent of new applications for shot guns certificates were
refused.

	- 2,440 dealers were registered to sell firearms in 1993, 60 more than
in 1992.

	- Firearms permits granted to visitors covered about 2,300 persons,
with a further 5,300 covered by visitors shot gun permits.

Although each weapon is individually registered to its owner,
no centralised numbers are kept or collated and the number
of actual weapons involved is not known by the Home Office.
