Annual Abstract of Statistics 1991, page 63: England & Wales 1988

Fatal injury by pistol 7
Serious injury by pistol 37
Slight injury by pistol 61

A serious injury is one which necessitated detention in hospital or
involved [any] fractures, concussion, severe general shock, penetration
by a bullet or multiple shot wounds.

Annual Abstract of Statistics 1991, page 62: England & Wales

Reported offences in which firearms were used...

1978 pistol 348
1988 pistol 1321

1978 sawn off shotgun 239
1988 ---- " ----- 451

1978 rifle 6
1988 --"-- 12

Handguns are subject to greater restrictions (I cannot honestly use the
word "controls") than any other gun, yet the use of them quadrupled
over this period. That's how ineffective our laws are.
