Why is that an organization (yours) financed by tax dollars collected from Americans of all political parties, distorts the facts into compliance with the Democratic party's platform? I am a 22 year old college student and a gun owner. I believe that the gun and magazine ban is wrong because it denies Americans the freedom of choice based on soley cosmetic attributes. So-called "assault weapons" function no differently than so-called "sporting weapons." This is like saying a Cadillac with a hood ornament is illegal, but one without is fine. The function is defined by the will of the user, not the object itself. I hope in the future you will offer equal time to the dissenting opinion. Then truly, all things may actually be considered. Neil Smith <=- TH> Is there any way we can stop this bill, or is it a forgone TH> conclusion? Sorry to take so long getting back to you. I'm about 200 messages behind. To answer your question, I don't know. I've seen stuff about it on TV; reports say that the nerds and the ACLU are up in arms. The only lists I subscribe to relate to Second Amendment issues, and they're preoccupied with Newtie's wonderful Pre-Veto Hearings. TH> I am appalled at the complete lack of interest in this TH> issue. Nobody (except for you and me, apparently) seems to TH> care. Well, I'll carbon this to the lists with the following observations: If I were a Democrat, and the internet had (A) been effective in putting Republicans in the driver's seat in Congress and the Senate, if it (B) threatened to change possession of the White House, as well, and if it (C) seemed to be shaping up as the medium through which an effective third party will finally come to the fore and (D) every vestige of my own party's 60-year-old socialist policies could be discredited and eradicated from American history, I'd think it was a good idea for the government -- preferably meaning my party -- to get the internet back under control, wouldn't you? And what better way to chill free speech than through the time-proven, "they can't possibly enforce this ridiculous law" method of selective state terrorism we presently see employed by the IRS, the BATF, and the DEA? And if, as usual, we could rely on plenty of help from the short-sighted and feeble-minded opposition -- the tired old outfit most likely to be replaced by that above-mentioned third party -- so much the better. [Simulated Democrat mode toggled OFF] Thomas, this initial move to censor the internet is just as clearly a threat to the Bill of Rights as the War on Drugs has been. Trouble is, there are still some retards out there who have to be convinced about the latter, and while we're doing that, we're gonna be shut down by the former. Or we'll decide that both major parties want only to control our lives and differ only in the perfunctory justifications they offer for it -- and move to an established pro-liberty party while we still can. Neil Smith) To: [N--B--N] at [tomahawk.welch.jhu.edu] Subject: OKLAHOMA ================================================================= FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LIBERTARIAN SECOND AMENDMENT CAUCUS ON OKLAHOMA EXPLOSION However tragic and reprehensible the disaster in Oklahoma City today, it is obvious that the Clinton/Reno Administration perceive it as a political opportunity, not only for the re- election hopes of one of history's most discredited presidents, but as a chance to transform their inherent inability to prevent such disasters into another justification to increase the size, power, and intrusiveness of government. Feeding upon human calamity this way is in the basic nature of all governments, and constitutes one reason Libertarians wish to see them stringently curtailed. The mass media in particular have a solemn responsibility -- and if they wish to restore their own badly-damaged credibility, should make it their principal business -- to ensure that the Clinton/Reno administration do not profit from this tragedy. Although no indication exists yet as to the responsibility for this violent act, one thing is certain: it is a result, not of insufficient government, but of too much. If it is the work of Moslem terrorists, for example, it would never have occurred without unconstitutional United States interference in the Middle East. If it is in retaliation for the state terrorism committed two years ago in Waco, Texas, the same is true. These catastrophes never happened in America as long as the government maintained at least a semblance of compliance with the Constitution. Today, a mere semblance of compliance is no longer enough. The only way to prevent such tragedies in the future is to enforce the Bill of Rights. Americans should be reassured or advised -- whichever is appropriate -- that any political advantage taken by the current administration in this affair will be reversed by a future Libertarian government, and those responsible for seizing upon this excuse to weaken the Constitution further will be prosecuted to the fullest extent allowed by the highest law of the land.
