Subject: long awaited interview!!!!!

   Hey fellow babies,
it is I ...Rob....here again with something special for all
of you out there------an interview with Neil Gaiman of SANDMAN fame.
This interview was conducted over the system so please excuse the short
responses to the questions( I sent a list of questions to Neil and
he graciously answered them in a letter back--it's a little like playing
CLUE alone----but I learned a little from it anyways).Stuff I added is
in square brackets.Nowwwwww....on with the show!

                   INTERVIEW WITH NEIL GAIMAN

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1)biography
 @@@@@@@@@@@
    born-November 10th ,1960
    current residing in-----the U.S.
1st professional work published-- [somewhere in] 2000 AD
favorite beer--- [ not answered---guess Neil is leaving the ads
                                       to Mr.Liefeld]
last good book read--SADEAN WOMEN by Angela Carter
last good movie seen-- The CRYING GAME

2)First of all, your SANDMAN stuff is all done by different artists.Do
you have the specific artist in mind when you write the story..and
tailor the story to that artists strengths----or do you just write the
story with no artist in mind at all?
>>> I won't write a story unless I know who'll be drawing it (see the
Calliope Script intro in DREAM COUNTRY.) <<<<<<<<

3)Do the constant comparisons to alan moore ever annoy you--I mean that
it must be a little bit irritating to always be mentioned in the same
breath ( or even confused for the other ).
>>> Nobody's compared me to Alan for many years now.I don't know of
any occasions on which we've been confused. <<<<<<<

4) Do you consider the Vertigo/Sandman stuff to be in a different
universe( or continuity ) from the regular DC stuff
AND---> how did you feel about some of the SANDMAN
stuff creeping into the regular DC continuity
(ie--Death popping up in Firestorm and in Legion,or
your version of Dr.Destiny popping up in JLA)
         >>>>>>> [ it's ] not a different universe[ ie-the VERTIGO one],
                        but it's a long bus-ride from the DC universe<<<

5) What comics--if any --do you collect?
 >>>> I don't collect any. I read CEREBRUS,LOVE&ROCKETS, YUMMY FUR and
most of the other DRAWN & QUARTERLY titles, HATE, EIGHTBALL and
    others.<<<<<

6) How did you enjoy working with Todd McFarlane on that issue of
Spawn?(and is there anyone else over at Image that you would want to
   work with?)
  >>>>>>> I enjoyed it very much. I've been talking about doing
something with jim Lee for years, but we're both pretty busy.<<<<

7)What is your opinion of the whole DEATH OF SUPERMAN thing?
 >>>>> I think it was a very interesting example of media manipulation.<

8) In Dream Country, when Element Girl appeared---what exactly happened
to her at the end ( your answer here would settle a long and overdrawn
arguement a few of us here have had since the story appeared) ?
>>>>>>> Good question. [ arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! ] <<<<<<<<<<<

9)Is THERE any mainstream DC or Marvel character that you would want to
  put your touch on ( ie--Spiderman )?
>>>>> PREZ . [ for those of you not in the know--Prez was a DC book
back in the early 70's and was about the 1st teenage PRESIDENT of
the United State of America. Even hippies considered it a goofy
series. He even appeared in Supergirl's regular series at the time.
Most consider it as one of the series least likely to be brought back,
but who knows anymore--- I mean look at how they brought back
Brother Power----maybe one day you Green Team fans out there will get
 lucky as well.] <<<<<<<<<

10)How would you describe Morpheus' personality?
 >>>>>>> EVOLVING. <<<<<<<<<<<

11) What issue do you plan to finish Sandman with--and what then?
>>>>>> [neil plans to finish with...] the last one. <<<<<<<<<

12) Any news on a Sandman movie?
 >>>> NOTHING CONCRETE . <<<<

13) What do you think about Sandman/Endless/Death merchandise and
books being a regular part of the set on the TV show ROSEANNE
( the daughter hasthis stuff all over her room )?
  >>>>>> I think it's neat .<<<<<<<

14) How far in advance do you plot the series?
  >>>> Depends. I've known the shape of it pretty much since the
beginning, but it changes and evolves as it goes. <<<<<<<

15)Any upcoming projects that you would like to discuss?
  >>>>>> UPCOMING PROJECTS include a miniseries based on the next
Alice Cooper album [ damn---does this mean that I now have to add
an Alice Cooper album to my collection so I know what's going on],
a fairy story with Charles Vess, and Mr. Punch, a graphic novel
Dave McKean. AND i plan on finishing SANDMAN.
There will also be a collection of some of my shorter fiction
        coming out in October.
                    Hope this is of use.
                    best
                    n <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
