PROJECTS & SCHEDULING

18. Will there be more Graphic Novel collections coming out soon?

No. Because of recent troubles in the comics industry, the printing of
more graphic novels has been put on hold.

Richard Pini writes:

"[More graphic novels] anytime soon? Doubtful. The price of paper (a major
fraction of the price of making a comic or a graphic novel) went up nearly
50% in the past few months, and these hikes are projected to continue for
another year at least, maybe longer. I can't speak for the larger
companies, but this has put a painful crimp in our plans for book
collections. Add to this the turmoil in the comics business occasioned by
such moves as Marvel and DC going with exclusive distribution
arrangements, and it's a mess."

"I strongly recommend to everyone that you start looking more aggressively
for the comics as they come out, via shops, subscription or mail order. It
could be *some* time before the new stuff finds its way into book form.
Plus, Warp could use the increased sales. I can't imagine a publisher
right now who couldn't."

"GN production is on hiatus for a little while to give us some breathing
room in the current market. Sales figures on EQ-Metamorphosis are
encouraging, and if this upward trend continues, we'll be in a much more
secure place to start doing volumes again."

*20. What's this about a movie?

To get the latest news about the proposed EQ feature film, go to
Elfquest.com <http://www.elfquest.com/Movie.html>. They carry the most
up-to-date information, plus any storyboard art that they are allowed to
show the public.

Here's a quick-n-sketchy synopsis of what's happening with the movie
(which, by the way, is an ANIMATED project, not live-action):

On March 15, 1994, a development agreement was signed between Warp
Graphics and the Ed Pressman Film Corporation. Ed Pressman is the
producer; he has also produced The Crow, Judge Dredd, Hoffa, Wall Street,
Talk Radio, Reversal of Fortune, Conan the Barbarian, and Storyville,
among others. The director is Jeremiah Chechik, who directed Benny & Joon,
Tall Tale, and Diabolique.
Warp Graphics supplied a treatment for the film, and Pressman
liked it. Wendy moved out to Los Angeles to work on the storyboard and
other aspects of the project. No animation studio or voice actors have
been chosen yet, and there are no definite production or release dates
set.
The treatment has been rewritten a number of times, and the story
does not follow the entire EQ arc exactly. Instead, it apparently combines
the events of Fire and Flight with a "third act" involving Rayek's
vengeance and the consequences thereof. According to Elfquest.com: "It now
includes scenes and information not seen before in the comics, as well as
material taken from Book 1, Book 9 and scattered bits here and there. It
has become incredibly mythic, something not even the comics conveyed to
this extent."

As of this writing, the working title for the movie is "Wolfrider."

21. Can I do one of the voices in the movie? Even just a background
        "extra"?

Voice actors, like any other kind of actor, aren't chosen freely. In order
to get work in a professional film as a voice actor, you generally need to
belong to the appropriate Actor's Guild (even "extras" have a Guild). It's
through the Guild, and through various agents, that voice actors are
contacted to go to auditions, and from there a pool of talent is built up
from which to make the final choice. The director and his casting
assistants are the ones who make the official decisions in that area. (A
similar answer also applies for those who would like to work on the movie
as composers, animators, and so on.)

22. What's this about a video?

Yes, there was a video, called the Elfquest Video Comic Book. Only Volume
1: Fire and Flight was completed. It is not true animation, but a
technique called "animatics" (what Richard calls "The techie term for
cutouts on popsicle sticks slid across the screen"). The project is
considered (to use a mild term) unsuccessful. There is nowhere to order
it; it has long since sunk into obscurity.

Richard Pini writes: "The ad for the wretched videos [that ran in the
middle of KotBW #1] was accepted in the roughly 6 month window when we
believed that the producer could and would make good on his promises.
There's a longer story than that, of course, but that's the essence of it.
Once we learned that the project was going to be a fiasco, the ad had
already run. [...] Someone asked how we could ever let that happen. We
didn't 'let' it happen. It happened out from underneath us even as we were
engaged in litigation to *keep* it from happening."

23. Is there an Elfquest CD/tape?

Yes, there is a collection of EQ songs, available either on CD or tape.
It's called "A Wolfrider's Reflections: Songs of Elfquest," and it has 22
tracks, all sung in a folk (or "filk") style. Fan reaction has been
extremely positive.

Richard Pini writes:

"Warp Graphics is happy to acknowledge the time and effort that many
people put into spreading the Elfquest word, as it were. We ask only one
thing in return, and that is that whenever you create a piece of
Elfquest-related artwork or fiction or whatever, you append the
appropriate legal disclaimer, which runs as follows:"

Elfquest, its characters, situations, logos and their distinctive
likenesses are trademarks of Warp Graphics, Inc. All rights reserved
        Worldwide.

"If you scan Elfquest artwork that has been published by Warp Graphics (a
practice we're not fond of, but information will find a way...) then we
require that you append the following legal disclaimer to every image that
you scan:"

*25. Are there MUSHes?

[A quick note about MUSHes, for newcomers: a MUSH is a form of MUD, an
online multi-user game. For more info on MUDs, check out
rec.games.mud.announce; a FAQ all about MUDs gets posted there regularly.]

There are a number of EQ-themed MUSHes, or EQ areas on other MUDs. This
list isn't necessarily exhaustive, and is prone to going out of date;
MUSHes can rise and fall fairly quickly.

                Two Moons: lupine.org 4201
                Elfquest-the Quest Continues: buddy.ludd.luth.se 3100
                Lost Tribes: lost.strange.com 1066 (130.253.208.80 1066)
                EQ-themed area on Retroactive MUD: mud.id.net 3000
                Dreamberry Tales: see below

        TWO MOONS
This MUSH diverged from the comics right before Kings of the Broken Wheel
issue #7. Book characters are available; to find out which ones, log on as
a guest character and type +roster reserved. There is a mailing list,
TWOMOONS-L, for all manner of discussion related to TwoMoons MUSH.
Subscribe by sending email to [l--ts--v] at [lupine.org] with this line in the
BODY (not the subject): subscribe twomoons-l Your Name Here
In place of "Your Name Here," put (guess what?) your name.
Messages to the list itself should be sent to [twomoons l] at [lupine.org.]

        ELFQUEST: THE QUEST CONTINUES
'Connect guest guest' to look at the game, read 'news' for information.
According to The Netquest FAQ (available from Crone
<[dm 003 c] at [uhura.cc.rochester.edu]>): "Many features are open; log on and ask
Leetah or Timmain for help. There is a Book Character Box in the OOC
area; if you are interested in a feature, that's the best place to look."

        LOST TRIBES
'Connect guest guest' to look at the game, read 'news' for information.
According to The Netquest FAQ (available from Crone
<[dm 003 c] at [uhura.cc.rochester.edu]>): "Ellen West writes: 'Lost Tribes is for
the moment on registration, so getting a personal character requires
sending the suggested character-name and a temporary password to
[f--e--e] at [u.washington.edu.] Currently the only restriction is on character
names from the published books.'"

        EQ-THEMED AREA on RETROACTIVE MUD
This is a personal project of Loyce "Hawke" Ciano; it's located in her
area in the "air" world on Retroactive MUD. For more information about how
to get to the right area, and things to do while you're there, contact
Wildheart/Hawke at <[w--zr--n] at [UDel.Edu]>

        DREAMBERRY TALES
According to The Netquest FAQ, v. 3.5 (available from Crone
<[dm 003 c] at [uhura.cc.rochester.edu]>): "Not currently open for character
creation or roleplay, Dreamberry Tales (set after the fall of Blue
Mountain) is interested in builders and coders." For more information,
write to <[dm 003 c] at [uhura.cc.rochester.edu]>.

26. What about IRC?

Yes, there is an EQ-related IRC channel: #Elfquest.

[A quick note about IRC, for newcomers: IRC stands for "Internet Relay
Chat," an online collection of real-time chat groups. For more info on
IRC, check out the Usenet newsgroup alt.irc.questions; a FAQ on the
subject is posted there regularly.]

*27. What is EQUEST-L?

EQUEST-L is a computer mailing list devoted to Elfquest. To subscribe,
send email to [l--ts--v] at [elfquest.com], with the subject "Hello," and these
two lines in the BODY of the message:

        SUBSCRIBE EQUEST-L Your Name
        set equest-l mail digest

In place of "Your Name," put (what else?) your name. The second line sets
your account to "digest", meaning you receive all of the day's posts
combined in one big message (this helps cut down on mailbox crowding-- the
list has heavy traffic). If you'd rather get each individual post as it's
posted, leave out the second line. If you ever need to unsubscribe, send
an email to [l--ts--v] at [elfquest.com], with the subject "Goodbye," and this
line in the BODY of the message:

         UNSUBSCRIBE EQUEST-L

Automated commands like the ones above go to the address
[l--ts--v] at [elfquest.com], and actual posts to the list go to
[equest l] at [elfquest.com.] EQUEST-L also has its own FAQ, with many useful
tidbits for the well-informed listmember. You can get a copy from the
FAQ-Keeper, Dorinda Hartmann <[d m hartma] at [students.wisc.edu]>.

Please note that although EQUEST-L has elfquest.com in its address, it is
neither administered by nor affiliated with Warp Graphics. Some EQ writers
and artists do read it, and posts have been used in the letters pages.

*28. What are alt.comics.elfquest and rec.arts.comics.elfquest?

These are the Usenet newsgroups dedicated to discussion of Elfquest.
Alt.comics.elfquest was the first one, but a vote finally went through to
form a new group under the "rec" hierarchy, rec.arts.comics.elfquest.
Having a "rec" group gives us new advantages, such as distribution to many
more news servers. A few people still post to the old alt group, but the
majority of the traffic now goes to the rec group.

Just as with EQUEST-L, some EQ writers and artists read the newsgroup
(most often r.a.c.e.), and Richard sometimes uses posts in the letters
pages.

29. Can I reach www.elfquest.com even if I don't have WWW access?

Yes! You can do many other things by email, too, like FTP and Usenet. I
strongly recommend this very handy document: "Accessing The Internet By
E-Mail: Doctor Bob's Guide to Offline Internet Access." You can retrieve
the most recent copy by sending e-mail to one of the addresses below:

To: [l--ts--v] at [ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu] (for US/Canada/etc.)
Enter only this line in the BODY of the note:
        GET INTERNET BY-EMAIL NETTRAIN F=MAIL

To: [mail server] at [rtfm.mit.edu] (for Eastern US)
Enter only this line in the BODY of the note:
        send usenet/news.answers/internet-services/access-via-email

To: [m--lb--e] at [mailbase.ac.uk] (for UK/Europe/etc.)
Enter only this line in the BODY of the note:
        send lis-iis e-access-inet.txt

If you can't wait to find out how to get to www.elfquest.com via email,
here are the bare-bones instructions for just one of the ways to do it.

Send e-mail to:

        [a--o--a] at [www.undp.org]

The BODY of your message should look like this:

        www
        send http://www.elfquest.com/title.html

This will send you the main Elfquest.com page. There will be numbers now
and then in the text; these show where other documents are referenced. A
list of these numbers will be at the bottom of the page, along with the
addresses of the documents they refer to, in case you'd like to request
any of them.

You can also send a message to [a--o--a] at [www.undp.org] with this in the body:

        www
        deep http://www.elfquest.com/title.html

This will send you the main Elfquest.com page, plus all of the documents
referenced on that page. Be careful-- this can result in a *lot* of mail!
