I can't do that in ascii... ==== FIT TO PRINT by cathrine yronwode for the week of April 10, 1995 THIS IS FIT TO PRINT NUMBER 527: There is lot of new stuff in my box of "to review" material. SERGIO ARAGONES GROO #1: This is new? Aaah, well, i meant to send forth congratulatory remarks when the first Image issue came out, but i forgot. Lucky for me, Mark and Sergio are still running #1 jokes, so i'm not too late. Hey, you know, i really liked Groo when Pacific Eclipse Marvel put it out, and i really like it now. That's what so neat about creator-owned comics, folks: no corporate suit can ever replace the members of the genius-level talent-team that's running this show with the dull robot-brains of their choice. Long live Groo, no matter who publishes it! SECRETUM SECRETORUM #0: Hmm. I am not sure i get the point here. Part pick-up collage art from books on ancient Egypt and the occult, part amateur strip-zine, this b&w comic tells the story of well, that is the problem; i am not sure what it tells the story of. Terry Echterling and D. C. Nash of Twilight Twins Productions string together some hot riffs from Foucault's Pendulum or Illuminatus! by running through the lives of Count Cagliostro, a temple architect whose geometry offends Imhotep, two errant Knights Templar who befriend their enemies and are rewarded with a close-up view of a cosmic belly-dance, and three young 20th century men who appear to be watching The Wicker Man on video-but the vague storyline will need tighter focus and better art to keep readers coming back at the dubious price tag of $3.50. Issue #1 will ship in June, 1995. To order #0, contact the creators at P. O. Box 281, Keego Harbor, Michigan 48320. FRIENDS OF LULU: This organization for women in the comic book business (creative, staff, business, distribution, retail) is functioning as an APA with 24 members, and more are welcome. To join and con-tribute to the group, contact Liz Schiller, 6000 Lawton Avenue, Oakland, California. Dues are $5.00; minac is not stated; copy count is 35. THE SAVAGE DRAGON #15-16: Head-leeches are cool. I only wish that those who are turned into murdering maniacs by them could feel sorrow for the pain they cause while "under the influence." There is a difference between accepting blame and regretting the damage one has done-but in today's don't-look-back society, perhaps legal immunity gives one moral immunity as well. Bonus points to Eric Larson for his deft cross-cutting between the extended super-battle and the hunting down of the unarmed Frank Darling; that was a real thrill, and the pay-off was worth it. SCARY MONSTERS MOVIE PARODY CARDS: Clever parody art by Ronn Foss, Mike Vosburg, Grass Green, and a host others and a limited edition status of only 2,000 sets combine to make this 36-card package an intriguing novelty for card collectors. The concept-fake lobby cards for movies like "The Day the Earth Still Stood," "Plenty Million Miles to Earth," "Plan Nein from Outer Taste" and so forth-harks back to humour trading cards of the 1960s. Fans of low-budget monster and science fiction movies will find all their favourites roasted here, but the project is marred by a sloppy, unpleasing limited-palette colouring job, and the price-$14.95 for the regular set or $19.95 for a special set with a 37th signed card-is going to keep many potential buyers away. Available from Dennis Druktenis Publishing, 348 Jocelyn Place, Highwood, Illinois 60040. Original art can be had from Ronn Foss, HCR 3 Box 40, Birch Tree, Missouri 65438. THE HARVEYVILLE FUN TIMES: Here we have a fanzine for Harvey Comics characters, including Richie Rich, Casper, Dot, Lotta, Audrey, and so forth. Vol. 5 #18, the most recent, covers the Macauley Culkin Richie Rich movie in detail. Production is of semi-professional quality (20 typeset pages on white paper, with photos and illos). Subs are $10.00 for 4 issues/1 year.
