Trouble is, it's only been nine years since last time. There is no more Eclipse Comics to wash downstream (the company declared bankruptcy on the Winter Solstice of 1994), and i now live in nearby Forestville, but the Claypool Comics' production department is here and CNN is showing alarming footage of parts of Forestville under water, so friends and fans have phoned to ask if i'm okay. I'm fine. But my phones have not been working nor, until late today, has the electricity. It's been frustrating as all get out to sit around with no power, perfectly able to cook on a wood stove and read a book, but not able to turn on a light bulb, much less the computer. At the high point of the outage, 45,000 were off the grid. I'm confined to a one-square-mile island, bounded on the north and east by the Russian River, on the west by a platoon of National Guards in camouflage uniforms who are not letting anyone pass, and on the south by a creek that is choked with fallen trees and is running over the highway instead of under it. Down at the foot of Covey Road, folks are rowing by in aluminum canoes, on the way to Speers' Market. The Speers' parking lot is filled with television crews, emergency vehicles, and the battered trailers of folks who have moved up from lower ground. The water line is just a hundred yards from the door of the market. The groceries are just about gone now, but there still is plenty of beer. In fact, there's been a kind of tailgate party going on at the parking lot all day. Maybe that's why Governor Pete Wilson, California's entry in the George Bush look-a-like Contest, decided to fly into Forestville to hold a press conference. Yep, as Humphrey Bogart said of Casablanca, he "came for the waters." The state government flew him in, of course, and that took a lot of my tax dollars, and then every television and radio station worth its ad rates had to fly in a reportorial team to cover his little photo opportunity. The only dry place in all of Forestville that could hold a governor, his security team, and 50 reporters was the garage at the Volunteer Fire Department building, up the hill from Speers', so that's where the event was held. I got word of it through the grapevine and went on over in the pouring rain. It seemed like the sociable thing to do. When i got there, i found out that the public was most definitely UNinvited. Tough looking men in uniforms (also flown in for the occasion) stood at the doors checking press badges and turning away town folks. I walked up to one of these men, and smiled. When he said, "Press pass," i did not lie. I simply pointed toward the north and said, "It's a mess out there, down at Speers' Market." He waved me in. The next guard i faced was taking sign-ins from the press. "Write your name and the name of the organization you're with," he said, handing me a clipboard. I wrote: "catherine yronwode/CBG" Who knows what he thought of that, but he did notice i had no camera. "Print journalists down in front," he said. The first person i saw was a woman from National Public Radio. "Hey, I know you!" she shouted. "You did those serial killer trading cards! "Yeah, but i'm with CBG now," i said. "Good for you," she said, with a vague smile, and then Pete Wilson walked in, and i crouched under a CBS video tripod, right at his feet. So much for security. The governor posed manfully against Forestville Volunteer Fire Department truck #5 and declared 18 counties to be disaster areas. I noticed that he was wearing a pair of fancy L. L. Bean two-tone rubber boots. If i'd have been a mass murderer, i could have shot him. As it was, i just wondered why his boots were so clean and dry. Mine were sopping wet and coated with mud. But, then, i live here. ==== Fit to Print appears in print each week in Comics Buyers Guide and is available via e-mail. Tell your friends!
