From: Peter M Coogan <[c--ga--e] at [student.msu.edu]> Subject: Comics Studies Email 7/94 Date: Tue, 5 Jul 1994 11:28:01 -0400 (EDT) Welcome to Comics Studies Email (July 1994) I am Peter M. Coogan, doctoral student in American Studies at Michigan State University, co-editor of the newsletter Comic Art Studies, and co-founder of the Comic Arts Conference. Comics Studies Email (CSE) is a service I've set up to coordinate communication about comic scholarship, and it will feature a number of publications and services. For the purposes here, the term "comics" includes comic books and strips, sequential art (including those works not commonly thought of as comics), and cartoons (single-panel, magazine, and other). Related fields, such as animation, adaptations of comics materials in to other media, and so forth, will be included where appropriate. Please do not send listserve commands to my address as I am not a listserve. To subscribe to the CSE service, or to receive any of the publications, send me explaining what you want and including enough information so that I can create an alias (First and Last name, and an identifying comment). My alias function automatically picks up the eddress. If you would like to personalize CSE (i.e. to receive only the newsletter, or only the news and research information, or some other permutation), be added to or subtracted from CSE, or for more information contact: Peter M. I neither need nor want to do everything, so help will be appreciated. III. ARCHIVAL SITE INFORMATION: CSE publications are archived on the Cerebus ftp site at nspace.cts.com, in Comics/About Comics/Comic Arts Studies/. HOW TO USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Single quotation marks below are not email punctuation, but signify what is to be typed. If it says to type '[j--r--y] at [teetot.acusd.edu]', you would type jerry's e-mail address, without the single quotes. When you see _double_ quotes, you _do_ need to type these. If it says to type 'cd "Comic Arts Newsletter"', you will need to include the double quotes, but you will not include the single quotes. Underscores represent italics. Thiey are used simply to set off titles of files and titles of directories when something is described. When a list of commands is given that need to be used in sequence, they are _indented_. This is for clarity. When you type the commands, you should not indent them yourself. GETTING TO THE HEART OF CEREBUS Cerebus can be accessed via _ftp_, _gopher_, or by _e-mail-ftp_. Direct questions about this site to Jerry Stratton, '[j--r--y] at [teetot.acusd.edu]'. If you are familiar with the finger command, 'finger [h--p] at [nspace.cts.com]'. GOPHER The easiest way to use this site is with _gopher_. Type 'gopher nspace.cts.com' on unix or VMS, or ask your local computer guru how to use _gopher_ from your personal computer. Once you have connected to Cerebus, follow the _Comics_ directory to _About Comics_" and then _Comic Arts Studies_. FTP To connect via _ftp_, type 'ftp teetot.acusd.edu', and give the username 'ftp'. You might have to type 'user ftp' if you use VMS. When you are asked for a password, type your e-mail address. Then, type: cd Comics cd About?Comics cd Comic?Arts?Studies to move into the "Comic Arts Studies" area, and ls to see what's there. Use 'help' to get help on using your version of ftp. If you want more detailed help, and you are using Unix or VMS, exit _ftp_ and type 'man ftp' or 'help ftp'. FTP VIA E-MAIL To connect via e-mail: send to either '[f t pmail] at [sunsite.unc.edu]' or any other ftpmail site you know about (their commands will be different). To get a directory listing of the _Comic Arts Studies_ directory, send this message: connect nspace.cts.com cd "Comics/About Comics/Comic Arts Studies" dir quit Use the subject 'Comic Art Studies'. The directory listing will be sent back to you via electronic mail. To get the file _Comic Arts Newsletter #52_, and a list of the files in the directory _Essays_, send the following message to the _ftpmail_ address: connect nspace.cts.com dir "Comics/About Comics/Essays" cd "Comics/About Comics/Comic Arts Studies" get "Comic Arts Newsletter #52" get "Introduction" quit Then send the message. You'll be sent the file and directory listing as separate e-mail messages.
