[d--n] at [klg.com] --- Griffy _________________________________________________________________ From: Don Marks <[d--n] at [klg.com]> Subject: Good Taste Awards 2000 -- Final Comments To: [c--m--x] at [indra.com] (Comix List ) Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 22:14:01 -0500 (EST) And that's all she wrote. The Good Taste Awards have come to an end for yet another year. A big Thank You to all of the people who took the time to vote (35 in round 3 -- down almost 50% from last year!) and especially to the people who voted in all 3 rounds. The decline in numbers may be due to the quiet nature of the list these days or perhaps due to a dissatisfaction with the inevitable mainstreaming of choices that the final ballot brings, but it seems that there are still enough people who get something out of this bit of silliness to keep it going for now. I started putting this year's Goodies together in the grip of a cold and, sure enough, I'm sending out these results in the grip of another one. In between, I had the busiest couple of weeks at work that I've had in a long time, but the Goodies were pretty much a joy to administrate throughout. I wish I could say that all that stress was responsible for the misspellings, mistaken ballot listings, and occasional accidental replies to the list, but the truth of the matter is that I'm just a bad proofreader. Sorry. First ballot in : Greg McElhatton Last official ballot in : Rui Cartaxo Late because of Angouleme but I took his votes anyways : Gert Meesters Best ballot : Bart Beaty, who once again took the time to comment on each nominee before finally arriving at a well thought-out choice The nominations process turned out to be quite telling. Our leading nominees, Alan Moore and Chris Ware, did end up taking home many prizes (4 for Moore, 6 for Ware), though not all. While some categories saw votes split relatively evenly, even most of those saw early leaders take home decisive wins in the end. The split between these winners and the general character of the list these days is quite pronounced. Either we have a lot of lurkers voting who don't post much or we all prefer to talk about things other than Moore and Ware. And who can blame us? There's a whole world of comic books out there to talk about, so let's talk. But first, a category by category rundown of the voting : 1. Best Writer After two years away, Alan Moore returns as the list's choice for Best Writer. The question of whether Moore's votes were for his new superhero line, the collection of his Graphic Novel "From Hell", or his performance piece turned comic book "The Birth Caul" might be answered by the strong placing of Eddie Campbell in the Best Artist category and the relatively weak placing of his superhero work in all other categories. Moore owned this race from the very beginning, with only Chris Ware and a late surge by Jason Lutes offering the merest threat to his supremacy. Despite the drop in participation this year, Lutes actually increased his number of votes. It was a pleasure to see underdog Posy Simmonds make a respectable showing in 4th place. 2. Best Artist Although Eddie Campbell had the early lead in this category, Chris Ware, buoyed by 3 strong issues of his series "Acme Novelty Library", took the Goodie home in the end. David B. maintains his third place standing from last year and Jaime Hernandez improved by moving from fifth place last year to fourth place this time around. 3. Best Cartoonist As with the second round ballot, this category saw votes spread relatively evenly over a large number of contenders. Chris Ware took the lead early and looked back only a couple of times to see a Dave Cooper/David B. surge fail to threaten his top position. David B. improved on his 4th place finish from last year by tying for second this time around. 4. Talent Deserving Wider Recognition Another close one. In the end, Pat McEown took the award, perhaps galvanizing the North American vote in a category that split the European-friendly votes over 4 nominees. Thomas Ott and a late flurry of votes for Dupuy et Berberian proved to be his only competition. 5. Best Publisher Coming out of the gate early, Top Shelf took this award easily despite having only one of its books win in any other category. Congrats to the folks who brought us "Goodbye Chunky Rice", "Hey Mister", and "Banks Eubanks" in the last year. Late rallies by Fantagraphics and L'Association were not enough to place those publishers higher than second and third, respectively. Interestingly, despite releasing new work from most of its stable of cartoonists and taking the Best Finite Series award, three-time winner Drawn & Quarterly came in last place here. 6. Best Continuing Series After one year away, Chris Ware's "Acme Novelty Library" returns to decisively win Best Continuing Series for the 4th time in 5 years. His only real competition, Jason Lutes' "Berlin", did not get close enough to become a real threat despite narrowly beating Ware out last time around. 7. Best New Series No contest here. The list decisively spoke that, in a year weak on new continuing series, Dave Cooper's "Weasel" was undoubtedly the highlight. Note our Best Guilty Pleasure winner, Alan Moore's "Top 10", in second place here with less than a third of Cooper's votes. 8. Best Finite Series A very tight category. The two Vertigo mini-series "Heavy Liquid" and "Scene Of The Crime" took an early lead until Chester Brown's "Louis Riel" forced a 3-way tie. The ultimate winner? None of them! Max's "The Extended Dream Of Mr. D." benefitted from a flurry of late votes to repeat his win in this category from last year. 9. Best Mini-Comic This was a pretty even race early on, but eventually Brian Ralph's "Fireball" and Jordan Crane's "The Last Lonely Saturday" emerged as the two to beat. This one went right down to the wire, with Ralph eventually repeating his win from last year by only one vote. 10. Best Web-Published Comic Another no-contest race. Although the first two votes that came in were for Mark Martin's "Crazy Boss", it didn't receive a single vote after that. Matt Madden easily took this category with his "Exercises In Style" strips from the Indy Magazine website. Despite the drop in participation this year, voting in this category remained about the same, perhaps indicating that web comics are starting to be taken a bit more seriously by the list at large. 11. Best Foreign Language Comic Our second weakest category in terms of participation, but few who have read the winner -- David B.'s "L'Ascension du Haut-Mal" -- will complain about his decisive victory. The phrase "best comic book ever" has been bandied about on more than one occasion to describe this book. Maybe I should finally read a copy. 12. Best Anthology Although this category ended as a rather close contest in the end, the Small Press Expo anthology led the race from the very beginning. Congrats to Jetlag and Non for their solid showing tied for second place. Last year's winner, "Lapin", came in last this time around. 13. Best Short Piece Another decisive victory, with Evan Dorkin's autobio piece consistently leading all others. That makes Dorkin the only person to ever take this award twice. (He won way back in the awards' inaugural year -- 1994 -- with an Eltingville story.) Thomas Ott's brief piece from a year-old issue of "Zero Zero" stayed with enough people to give it a second place finish. Note that Alan Moore fans consistently picked one of his short pieces over the other, though even that was not enough to land the story higher than a tie for third place. 14. Best Single Issue Ware again, but who can complain? His mammoth 13th issue of "Acme Novelty Library" was easily the comic to beat in this category from the very beginning of the awards. The only comic that even came close to threatening his grab for the title was the first issue of David Cooper's new series "Weasel". Note that last year's winner, Jason Lutes' "Berlin" did not make the final ballot this year. 15. Best Ongoing Serialized Story A very tight race right down to the very end saw Ware's "Jimmy Corrigan" continuity pull one vote ahead of Jason Lutes' "Berlin", thwarting Lutes' chances for a three-peat. Despite this list's ongoing love affair with Ware, this is the first time that he has won this category. Last year's fourth and fifth place finishers -- Seth's "Clyde Fans" and Debbie Dreschler's "Summer Of Love" -- occupy pretty much the same two places again this year. 16. Best One Shot Although Eddie Campbell's adaptation of Alan Moore's performance piece, "The Birth Caul", took an early lead in this category, some last minute votes for Augenblick's "Tales Of The Great Unspoken" made this a very tight race. The Goodie eventually went to Moore and Campbell, but only by a single vote. 17. Best Graphic Novel Another strong showing from Moore and Campbell, this time for the collection of their long-running serialized Graphic Novel "From Hell". A 3-way tie between it, "Goodbye Chunky Rice", and "Cave-In" was finally broken by a vote for Brian Ralph's book only to see Moore and Campbell surge past it in the end. 18. Best Reprint Collection Our first (I think) 3-way tie. There was very little consensus in this category, with "The Best of Bittercomix" and Dean Haspiel's "Daydream Lullabies" beat out by only a vote or two by the shared victory of Pete Sickman-Garner's "Hey Mister" collection, a collection of George Herriman's "Krazy Kat" strip, and DC's unearthing of Jack Cole's "Plastic Man". 19. Best Strip The sentimentalists on the list just didn't have enough sway to place "Peanuts" atop this category. Neither did the whimsicalists who champion Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts", although they did have enough power to take an early lead and finally end up in second place. No, it was the ironists who took a decisive victory in naming Carol Lay's "Story Minute" as the strip of the year. I'm curious as to whether the people who voted for Chris Ware's "Acme Novelty Library" strip actually read it in strip form. History buffs take note : ever since the demise of Bill Watterson's "Calvin & Hobbes", this category has been taken by a different strip every year. Viva diversity! 20. Best Guilty Pleasure Late rallies by DC's collection of Jack Kirby's "Forever People" and David Lapham's "Stray Bullets" were not enough to put them past Alan Moore and Gene Ha's "Top Ten". Curiously, back when the list was discussing Moore's new line of superhero comics, this one received little praise. Either its fans decided to stay quiet then and speak now or there have been a few converts since. (For my money, it's easily the best book in the line.) 21. Best Production Design Initially it looked like a close race between "Non", "Cave-In", and "Acme", but somewhere along the line Chris Ware's series surged ahead while several late votes for Ben Katchor's "The Jew Of New York" proved only enough to cement the man third place. 22. The Comics Journal Prize For Best Publication About Comics Since it had previously won this category 5 times in a row, we took the Comics Journal out of the running this year and named the category after it. The result? A decisive victory for Dan Raeburn's "The Imp". No one else even came close. Let's see if he manages to repeat next year or whether we will continue to honour previously unrewarded work in this category. 23. Best Poster Our weakest category overall. Perhaps the comics list is a bit reticent about patting each other on the back these days or perhaps no one thought there was much worthwhile to reward. Not to take anything away from Robert Boyd -- as an intelligent, provocative, and industry savvy poster, he certainly deserves his win -- but this category used to require 10 votes to even place 5th! Robert takes it this year with 8 votes while Sam Henderson and Charles Hatfield tie for second with 5 a piece. Once again, thanks to everyone who voted. I wish you all a year full of good comics and, of course, interesting discussion about them on this list. ================== http://www.interlog.com/~lamedog =================== Don Marks "I am th' dish, I am th' Tuffy, I am th' Lemon Joy."
