Actually here in the former Republic of Texas, there is only a little bit of federal land. We were allowed to keep our public lands when we entered the Union. Our economy is also pretty-well diversified (as much as most European countries). If memory serves, our GNP is only slightly below that of Canada. We also have a foreign border and a very long seacoast. All in all, a good candidate for a Quebec-like separatist movement. Problem is, then we’d have to learn French. — Peter H. Proctor
