Negative Space: software
- Eucalyptus, revisited
-
Eucalyptus is a great replacement for the paperback, not so great at using the fact that it’s a computer. But if you enjoy classics, I highly recommend it; it’s a beautiful e-reader for your iPhone/iPod Touch.
- Fenario
- The folder of misfit toys.
- FireBlade
- Software packages from ancient Fenario.
- FireShare Macintosh Electronic Mail Fileserver
-
FireShare Macintosh Electronic Mail Fileserver, an AppleScript fileserver and mailing list server, now defunct.
- Hacks
- Articles about programming in Python, Perl, Swift, BASIC, and whatever else I happen to feel like hacking at.
- Image Editors
- While Photoshop is probably the most well-known image editor, it’s heavy overkill for most web uses. There are a lot of free and low-priced alternatives that work great for web graphics.
- Information Backroads
- The information highway is still far from paved.
- The Library of the Future
- As near as I can tell, the “net of the future” is a Santa Claus that’s supposed to give us whatever we want whenever we want it. But can it really be that simple?
- MathPad is back!
- MathPad 3.0.4 now supports Mac OS X 10.7 and up.
- Maven: SQLite front end
- Cutedge has a SQLite3 front-end that almost works.
- Negative Space Software
- A long time ago, I wrote AppleScripts to manage my site, and I wrote osaxen to help speed up the scripts. These things are getting pretty old, and I don’t use them myself any more, but if you find them useful, great!
- Negative Space Software Select
- Recommended software to make serving and browsing easier.
- Nisus Writer Pro 2.0
-
The new Nisus is pure awesome: very easy to use, and it does everything I need.
- No distutils? Install Xcode
- If Distutils is not available on Mac OS X Leopard, install the Xcode developer tools. Also, the upgrade process I followed for upgrading from Mailman 2.1.9 to 2.1.12.
- Shadowrun Software
- Some very old software to help you out in your Shadowrun game. Also, a FAQ. Not sure why that’s there, but it’s a little late now to change it.
- Simple Photorealism using Persistence of Vision
-
Simple photorealism for people who can’t draw. This tutorial guides you through using the free Persistence of Vision ray-tracer. You’ll create a planet, with rings and an orbiting moon set against a starry background.
- Tomato: Easy routing software
-
If you think “easy routing software” sounds like an oxymoron, you should look at Tomato.
- Use a Real FTP Program
- I’m a little surprised at how many download sites still use FTP, but they do. You can often download more easily by using a dedicated FTP software package.
More Information
- ClickToFlash
-
This is the only add-on I use for Safari: it blocks Flash applications from loading as you browse the web, but lets you choose to view the Flash app with a single click. ClickToFlash has vastly improved browsing speed and the entire browsing experience.
- MAME: Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator
-
“When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game’s ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer. MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era.”
- Xcode
-
This is the premiere programming package for Mac OS X, and it comes with every Mac. Xcode allows you to program in Objective C, C, C++, AppleScript, and Java. Groups are working on integrating other languages such as Python, Perl, Ada, and Pascal.
