Pan-Galactic Towel Day
May 25 is towel day, so make sure to bring your towels. You never know what’s going to happen, and I don’t think anything gets the hang of Thursdays.
Towel Day is celebrated in honor of author and satirist Douglas Adams’s extended lunch break “to benefit the Megadodo Endangered Species Burger Bar in Southend”.
I’ll be bringing my official Hitchhiker’s Guide movie towel this year as well, despite my disappointment in the movie. I expect to retire it next year. To help assuage my disappointment I’ll also be mixing a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster and sleeping the whole thing off the next day. I’m going to call in early for lunch on Friday and just not come back.
With the right planning, it is possible to get the hang of Thursdays.

Make sure you have your towel. Towel Day is only two weeks away! I don’t remember seeing this video two years ago, so I’m posting it now.
And don’t forget your Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters either!
- Douglas Adams goes on extended lunch break
- Acclaimed satirist plans to beat previous record set by publishing executive.
- Towel Day
- “What do I do? Carry your towel with you throughout the day. When do I do it? May 25th. Where do I do it? Everywhere.”
- Towel Day (Wikipedia) at Wikipedia
- “On this day, fans and followers carry with them a towel at all times. This is inspired by the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in which the towel is described as the most massively useful item any hitchhiker can carry.”
- Douglas Adams
- Lots of hype about Douglas Adams, but includes a number of good articles and such about and by Adams on the “DNA” link.
More Douglas Adams
- Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
- While a decent enough movie, this adaptation of Douglas Adams’ brilliant satire drops the satire and ultimately doesn’t do anything different than most other movies today.
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
- One’s never alone with a rubber duck, you know. This is the most brilliant, inspired nonsensical satire since Lewis Carroll.
- Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster
- We had a last-minute bathrobe party on Towel Day in 2001 in honor of Douglas Adams, and before leaving I dug deep into our racial memory to reconstruct the true Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster. That is, I browsed the web about five minutes before leaving for Trader Joe’s.
