THE ALTANI AND L'DREY TIME SYSTEMS

A day is divided into eight parts (each roughly three hours

long) and each large part is divided into 64 smaller parts (each

roughly three minutes long). The "day" is actually 24 hours 5

minutes long.

To be precise, the day is divided up as follows:

Interval Name Duration

                         Hours Minutes Seconds

    Mar 24 5

    San 3 0 37.50

    Kir 0 2 49.30

    Ral 0 0 2.65

One day (Mar) is 8 San, 1 San is 64 Kir, 1 Kir is 64 Ral.

The Altani use an octal (base 8) number system (funny about that,

they have two hands with three fingers and an opposable thumb on

each hand). The day begins at sundown and ends at the following

sundown (Altani are nocturnal, remember?). A time of 5.34 (5

San, 34 [octal] Kir = 28 [decimal] Kir) would be 15 hours 187.5

sec + 48 minutes 1380.4 seconds or 16 hours 14 minutes 7.9 sec-

onds after sunset.

Each year is 667.2 local days long, and the calendar is

divided up into four seasons. The year starts with Spring and

ends with Winter. Spring, Summer, and Fall are each 167 days long

and Winter is 166 days long. Every five years, an extra day is

added at the end of Winter in order to keep the calendar correct.

There are no "days of the week" as such in the Altani calendar.
