1) What is Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay?
======================================

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) is the roleplaying system published by
Games Workshop. It is set in the Old World - a fantasy version of something
akin to renaissance Europe. The world is threatened by the forces of
Chaos. The major power in the Old World is the Empire, in which most of
the adventures are located. The Empire itself is a country full of intrigue,
conspiracies, and dark plots.

The game system originated as an adaptation of the Warhammer Fantasy Battle
miniatures wargame, provided as a small supplement with the WFB first edition,
and described by Katherine Kerr in a review in the Dragon magazine (#85) as
being "one of the most irritating new games I've ever read." :) Amongst
other things, the wargamesque combat system meant that novice PCs had a habit
of having their careers cut prematurely short after a single hit. Since then,
WFRP has been released as a fully developed roleplaying system, without the
rather amusing shortcomings of its predecessor.

Unlike many other roleplaying games, WFRP does not rely on flashy magic or
powergaming characters. The setting is dark and grim, although it contains
liberal sprinkling of gallows humour. It has most often been described as a
fantasy version of Call of Cthulhu, although the exact nature of play depends,
of course, on the tastes of the players and the GM.

The system mechanics revolve around percentage rolls based on the character's
statistics and skills. Rather than having static character classes,
characters move between careers as they progress through the Warhammer world.
Before embarking on the adventuring life, a character would have a mundane
occupation such as a fisherman, labourer or artisan's apprentice - but the
skills learnt in these professions may serve him in good stead later on. The
adventurer picks up new skills and develops his characteristics a profession
before moving on, either by choice or through fate, to a new
occupation.

2) Where is the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Mail List? How do I use it?
=======================================================================

To subscribe to the WFRP mailing list, send a message containing the line
SUBSCRIBE <Yourname> to the mailing list server software at
[w f rp request] at [gojira.monsta.com.] After that, you can send messages for
distribution to [w f rp] at [gojira.monsta.com.] The basic commands that you need to
know for the [w f rp request] at [gojira.monsta.com] address are:

SUBscribe
-- subscribe to the mailing list

UNSUBscribe
-- unsubscribe from the mailing list

HELp
-- gets a help file listing the all of the available commands

The list does support ftp access to its file archive. This can be done by
ftping anonymously to gojira.monsta.com - the files can be found in the
/pub/wfrp directory. Really old mailing list archives can be found by
ftping to morticia.cnns.unt.edu in the pub/lists/wfrp directory. The
mailing list
supports ftp by mail for those without normal ftp access - the HELP file has
all the necessary details on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please forward them to the list manager, Clay
Luther, at [w f rp owner] at [gojira.monsta.com.] He is far better equipped to handle
your queries than a humble FAQ keeper.

Those of us who have been on the mailing list for any length of time have
probably noticed the frequency with which it changes locations. monsta.com
is Clay Luther's personal system, so it is likely to stay put for the
foreseeable future.

2.1) Is there a mailing list for Warhammer 40K?
===============================================

Yes there is. The wfrp list given above concerns itself primarily with the
fantasy roleplay and battle systems, so discussions related to the WH40K
wargame are best directed to the list below:

Name: The Warhammer 40K Mailing List
Contact: [war 40 k request] at [silver.ipst.edu]
List: [war 40 k] at [silver.ipst.edu]
Admin: Rich Dellaripa <[Rich Dellaripa] at [ipst.edu]>
Info Updated: 29-Aug-1994
Notes: Reviews of 40K books as they come out, preferably from
more than one source. Other people's armies in detail. A
section on paint schemes and markings. New equipment.
House rules. Discussions about problems/questions with
the rules. Discussions of tactics in 40K. What's worked
for you in the past, etc.

3) Why isn't Games Workshop putting out any more WFRP material?
===============================================================

Flame publications has been dissolved, and it would appear that GW has no
interest in producing any more WFRP material in the foreseeable future. The
general consensus of opinion is that GW has decided that they can make far
more money out of marketing tabletop games and the associated hordes of
rather pricey miniatures that go with them.

If you have heard of the Lustria manuscript and the Marienburg supplement, I
am sorry to say that they died along with Flame. Rough drafts do exist, but
are unlikely to ever be seen unless someone from the net is able to upload
them.

Rumour had it that Atlas Games was to take over production of WFRP material,
however this appears no longer to be the case. The future of the Warhammer
Roleplay system appears once again to be on ice.

4) Is Realms of Sorcery EVER going to be published?
===================================================

It looked for a while as though it was going to be published by Atlas Games,
however recent developments seem to indicate the contrary - Atlas seems to
have their trading card game as a higher priority (grr ... MtG was a
Tzeenchish plot I am sure). As a result, Ken Rolston's work may not see the
light of day for a while yet, unless someone out there on the net happens to
own a publishing company.

Those of you with the Warhammer rulebook will remember the mention of a
"forthcoming" supplement called Realms of Sorcery that would expand on the
WFRP magic rules. Readers of White Dwarf may also recall that it was hinted
at being back in the production focus - and then nothing. We may still have
a little while to wait. Perhaps it will be put out on the tenth anniversary
of its original release date - that should be coming up soon.

The rules are likely to be the most comprehensive magic system yet written
for a roleplaying game (as can be confirmed by anyone who has seen the
mammoth draft copy). Their size has required a division into two volumes -
Realms of Sorcery (covering wizardly magic) and Realms of Divine Magick (for
clerics and druids).

Copies of Realms of Sorcery (the first volume) have been floating around the
net for a while, although it should be noted that these are draft manuscript
versions designed for the playtesting groups and should not be viewed as
completed products. Copies can be found on the Warhammer mailing list
archive (gojira.monsta.com - /pub/lists/wfrp/) and on the net.warhammer
project archive (tbird.cc.iastate.edu - frp/warhammer/) both of which are
accessible via anonymous ftp.

Ken Rolston has asked that all net copies of his work be removed when the
final version is scheduled for publishing (considering, after all, that they
shouldn't really have been there in the first place). He can be contacted at
[k--ol--n] at [aol.com.]

Needless to say, the work is _not_ in the public domain - printing off your
own copies and distributing them to friends is not permitted. Attempting to
sell bootleg copies (or offering them as incentive to purchase - it amounts to
the same thing) of a copyrighted work will get you into no end of trouble and
will only serve to reduce the chance of the final version getting published.

5) What is the net.warhammer project?
=====================================

The net.warhammer project has been around for around 23 months, set up in
response to people wanting a net.collection of new material created by
fellow internet dwellers for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

The idea is to set up a central location where ideas and creativity can be
shared. I am interested in hearing from anyone who has ever written their
own spell, monster or career class; designed their own adventure or campaign
setting; written their own computer program or ANYTHING for Warhammer, and
who is interested in sharing their efforts with others.

It seems that a project such as this is especially important, now that Games
Workshop has suspended production of WFRP material - if we want something for
Warhammer, we are going to have to write it ourselves.

Much of the material is under constant revision, and all the authors would
appreciate feedback - if you like it, EMail the contributor and tell him
to keep up the good work - if you don't like it, give some constructive
criticism. All work remains the property of the contributor.

With the demise of the greyhawk roleplaying archive, the net.warhammer
project now resides at tbird.cc.iastate.edu in the frp/warhammer directory
where it is accessible via anonymous ftp.

The net.warhammer project co-ordinator is David Peterson, who can be
contacted via EMail at [s t d g p] at [alinga.newcastle.edu.au]

6) What is the Warhammer Compendium?
====================================

[ed: The following write-up comes from David Cole]

The Warhammer Compendium is (will be) a collection of work related to WFRP
that will be of use to GM's and players.

The Compendium will contain such things as additional rules for combat,
weather, role-playing monsters (for the GM), extra races, careers, magic,
geographic locations (such as The Moot, Norsca and Araby), and anything else
you could think that might possibly be of use in a Warhammer game.

The Warhammer Compendium will be produced in a book format, created with
the TeX typesetting package, and will be distributed in PostScript (and maybe
ASCII) form. It will be distributed (probably) as Public Domain, but
hopefully someone may wish to publish it commercially (big wish there 8-) ).

Currently there are seven contributors (including myself), but of course
we are always looking for more. If you are interested in becoming a
contributor (as you have something that may be useful, or you are
planning to create something), please let me know.

The final results are planned to be of a professional quality, produced
under a rather different philosophy to the net.warhammer project. The
editor is David Cole, who can be contacted via EMail at
[David Cole] at [guru.apana.org.au] or [s 933384] at [yallara.cs.rmit.oz.au]

7) Is there a WFRP rules FAQ?
=============================

Sort of. A file exists by the name of "Alphonse Nitpicker's Obscura
and Miscellanea, Volume 1.1" by Clay Luther (it is archived on the
net.warhammer site as obscura.txt in the RULES directory). It
provides a collection of obscure but important rules, hints, and
"list" rules and fixes from the WFRP mailing list, covering most
rules trivia questions that pop up from time to time.

8) From where can I ftp Warhammer material?
===========================================

There are a number of sites containing material for Warhammer Fantasy
Roleplay, Warhammer Fantasy Battle and the Warhammer 40K miniatures rules
system. For each one, ftp to the appropriate site, login as anonymous
supplying your Email address as your password and head to the appropriate
directory:

gojira.monsta.com /pub/lists/wfrp
Contains the WFRP mailing list archives from June 1993 onwards, the Realms
of Sorcery Manuscript and some character sheets.

morticia.cnns.unt.edu /pub/lists/wfrp
Contains the WFRP mailing list archives from February 1991 to August 1992.

en.ecn.purdue.edu /stuff/wfrp
Contains the WFRP mailing list archives from February 1991 to April 1992.
The directories /stuff/PAINT /stuff/W40k /stuff/WFB and /stuff/BLOOD_BOWL
contain material that may be of interest to miniature painters, Warhammer 40K
players, Warhammer Fantasy Battle players and Bloodbowl players respectively.

tbird.cc.iastate.edu /frp/warhammer
Home of the net.warhammer project, with a rather sizeable amount of material.
Most of the material is uncompressed to allow easier WWW access. See FAQ
Section 5 for an idea of the kind of stuff contained here.

ftp.mpgn.com /Gaming/Warhammer
This is now the _sole_ site licensed by TSR to carry AD&D material. As a
result the site tends to be rather overloaded and slow. It contains a partial
copy of the old net.warhammer archive on greyhawk - this means, of course,
that the files are severely out of date. For some reason, some of the files
have also has their access privileges set so that no-one can downland them.
Others have been compressed in a cunning fashion so as to make them bigger
(?). In short, this site is more trouble than it is worth (unless you want to
get some AD&D stuff).

sun.rz.tu-clausthal.de /pub/specials/rpg
A german ftp server with german versions of some of the files on the
net.warhammer archive in its Warhammer and WFB directories.

8a) I can't use ftp from my site - how can I get these files?
=============================================================

The wfrp mailing list supports ftp by mail to retrieve the list archives and
other files kept on gojira.monsta.com. For further details see Section 2 of
the FAQ.

There are a couple of other ftp by mail servers around which can be reached at
[bitf t p] at [pucc.princeton.edu] and [f t pmail] at [decwrl.dec.com] - send a message with the
word HELP in the body to get the help files for each of these. As an example
of how a session with one of these servers might go, I've included the
commands that I sent to the bitftp server to get a copy of the 00UPDATE file
from the net.warhammer archive:

   FTP tbird.cc.iastate.edu UUENCODE
   USER anonymous
   CD /frp/warhammer
   dir
   get 00UPDATE
   quit

After a few minutes I was sent a copy of the transfer log and the file in
plain text format.

9) Has anyone got a Warhammer WWW page?
=======================================

A few people have set up World Wide Web pages containing links to WFRP
archives and information. The five that are up and running at the time of
writing are listed below. All are under development and are likely to be
continually updated, and most have pretty pictures on the main screen that
take ages to load in using Mosaic:

Carlos Jensen [c--l--j] at [ifi.uio.no]
   http://www.ifi.uio.no/~carlosj/Warhammer.html
   * links to ftp sites, mailing list archives and other WFRP pages
   * a copy of the WFRP FAQ in hypertext format (very nice)
   * a WFRP hypertext information service (under construction)
containing lists of WFRP articles from magazines and written by
people on the internet with links to the files on the
      net.warhammer site.

W.C.A Wijngaards [w--t--w] at [cs.vu.nl]
   http://www.cs.vu.nl/~wouterw/wfrp/index.html
   * links to ftp sites, mailing list archives and other WFRP pages

Morten Krog [m--t--k] at [ifi.uio.no]
   http://www.ifi.uio.no/~mortenk/WHintro.html
   * a collection of online documents - in progress and complete
   * home site of the Norsca project.

Oliver Rosenkranz [r--s--i] at [cs.tu-berlin.de]
   http://www.cs.tu-berlin.de/~rossi/
   * a large collection of online documents - unfortunately many of
these are gzipped and difficult to read online with some versions
      of mosiac.
   * A hypertext version of the Warhammer Encylopaedia.
   * home of Miragliano0.9 and the Herbiary
   * The link to this page has sped up dramatically since the last
      version of the FAQ.

Phil Dutre [Philip Dutre] at [cs.kuleuven.ac.be]
   http://www.cs.kuleuven.ac.be/~philipd/GAMES/gamespage.html
   * tonnes of links for a variety of games (including other WFRP
      home pages)

Peter Miehle ?
   http://www.informatik.uni-kiel.de/~pm/
   * A German WFRP WWW page with some online documents

Note that if you are on a machine that you cannot ftp or telnet from, then the
odds are that you can't access WWW pages either. Those without a graphics
capable terminal can use text web browsers such as Lynx - consult the WWW FAQ
file or ask your local guru for further information.

Incidentally, there is also an internet games store which is accessable via
the World Wide Web - the Sundragon games store at
http://www.sundragon.com/sundragon/store.html - they stock some WFRP stuff

Additional comments are also welcome.

THE ENEMY WITHIN CAMPAIGN

The Enemy Within GW ****
This is the first instalment of THE ENEMY WITHIN campaign. It describes the
political structure of the Empire, the history of the Empire, and contains an
introductory adventure "Mistaken Identity". This volume was later combined
with Shadows over Bogenhafen to form Warhammer Campaign; and with Shadows
over Bogenhafen and Death on the Reik to form Warhammer Adventure.
- TEW provides lotsa useful information and a great hook for a campaign
- Granted that you *must* own TEW, it is by far the weakest of the TEW
  series.
- A wonderful followup to the introduction to the Old World given in the WFRP
  rulebook

Shadows over Bogenhafen GW ****1/2
The second part of TEW campaign. It takes the characters to Bogenhafen, where
that get involved in a sinister plot of a chaos daemon. This volume was later
combined with TEW into Warhammer Campaign; and with TEW and Death on the
Reik into Warhammer Adventure.
- SoB is one the best adventures I've ever seen in any gaming genre.
- A good adventure with plenty of new role-playing opportunities. Our group
had never gone to a festival before this.
- This is one of the few mysteries I've seen done well for the fantasy genre.
- WFRP with Cthulhu-type elements.
- This was the instalment of the Enemy Within campaign that worked the best
  with my group

Death on the Reik GW ***1/2
Third part of TEW campaign. The characters travel around quite a lot, to end
up in Castle Wittgenstein, where they have to eliminate the leader of a Chaos
cult. This set also contains a booklet "River Life in the Empire". Originally
published as a boxed set, it was later reprinted as a hardback book and much
later combined with TEW and SoB into Warhammer Adventure.
- Disjointed, but a lot of fun episodes. The goblin in the red dress is a
hoot :>, while the adventure in Wittgendorf was really dramatic and
exciting. Did anyone else game out the whole assault on the castle at the
end? We did, using WFRP rules, not WFB. It was a lot of work for me to
  prepare, but well worth it!
- A strong and long adventure which takes many nights to complete, is full of
new places and people, and lots of black humour and nods at Hammer Films.
- Useful river and trading source material

Power Behind the Throne GW ****
Fourth part of TEW campaign. It takes the characters to Middenheim, where
they have to save the city from the evil plans of chaos cult.
- This was a brilliant plot, but I think it's just too difficult for one GM
to run alone. (Well, at least I found it a bitch to run...;>) The
roleplay is exhausting! Also there are many errors in the schedules of the
NPC's carnival appearances that can lead to confusion. The GM needs to
cross check all the references carefully.
- Not so good if your party isn't into heavy detective work
- One of the most complex adventures ever published, but that very complexity
  makes it less than perfect.
- Gawd, but this is a brilliant adventure!! But, take it from me, it is
almost impossible to run alone and give time for the necessary roleplay.
- Worth it just for the read even if it is too intimidating to run

Warhammer City GW **1/2
Companion volume to PBT. It details the city of Middenheim in greater detail.
Warhammer City & Power Behind the Throne were later coupled in the book City
of Chaos.
- A neat book, but probably one of the most difficult-to-use citybooks ever
  published.
- Suffers from being too thin for the price. Still, much useful material in
here. Try to buy it in the combined pack with Power Behind the Throne.
- Had enough trouble trying to keep everything in PBtT together without
throwing things from here at the PCs as well

Something Rotten in Kislev GW ****1/2
Fifth part of TEW campaign. It consists of three separate adventures, located
in Kislev. Includes plenty of background information on Kislev, its people
and its culture and extensive new material on undead, minor spirits and
renegade chaos gods.
- Another "place" in the Old World besides the Empire to play in, complete
with a different culture and religion.
- Another way to look at Dwarfs, Elves, Chaos Gods ("I'll peel you like an
ONION!"), Undead and Necromancers (maybe they're not as bad as Imperial
propaganda props them up to be) and even Hobgoblins.
- Kislev might as well have been China -- everything is upside down in these
adventures. The very best instalment of the TEW campaign.

Empire in Flames GW ***
Final part of TEW campaign. The characters have to save the Empire by finding
the warhammer of Sigmar.
- A few good and fun scenes, but marred by being too linear and having too
many scenes in which the PC's are spectators, not movers & shakers. Many
of the encounters were disappointingly unoriginal, too. Did anyone else
notice that the skeletons outside the shrine of Sigmar looked like nothing
more than a Hero Quest encounter?
- A disappointing conclusion to an excellent campaign - PBtT would have made
  a much better climax
- I'm actually doing a good job of running this adventure by keeping the plot
hook and writing the rest myself :)

THE DOOMSTONES CAMPAIGN
- A real let-down after the Enemy Within
- The Doomstones adventures are nothing more than an adaptation of an old
campaign for another gaming system. Its hook at the beginning was feeble
and some of the links to the Warhammer world at large suspect. With these,
I knew that GW's interest in WFRP was waning.

Fire in the Mountains Flame **
First part of the Doomstones campaign. A combination of dungeons and outdoor
encounters. Finally, the crystal of Fire is found.

Blood in Darkness Flame **
Second part of the Doomstones campaign. The characters have to explore a
dwarven comples to locate the crystal of earth.
- My friends liked the adventure, though only half of the party survived it

Death Rock Flame ***1/2
Third part of the Doomstones campaign. The adventure is set in a monastery,
where the characters have to solve a riddle in order to find the crystal
of air.

Dwarf Wars Flame ***
Fourth part of the Doomstones campaign. This adventure is in fact a giant
ancient dwarven complex, where the characters have to find the crystal of
water.

OTHERS

Death Dark Shadow Flame **1/2
This is a collection of short adventure ideas and source information, set
around the village of Kreutzhofen.

Castle Drachenfels GW **1/2
Adventure based on the novel Drachenfels. The characters have to explore
the castle of Drachenfels. This adventure is very though, and resembles more
a dungeon bash.
- A good adventure if run properly

Return of the Lichemaster Flame * - ***1/2
This adventure is based on the old boxed set "Terror of the Lichemaster" for
Warhammer Fantasy Battle 2nd edition. This is clear in the adventure.
[Opinion seems to be divided as to whether it is an excellent and chilling
adventure reminiscent of Aliens or a complete load of hack-and-slash rubbish
- that's the problem with subjective reviewing :)]

The Restless Dead GW ***
Compilation of adventures and new rules. Almost all material has been published
in White Dwarf. All adventures link into one campaign, but are originally
written as stand alones. Can be used to fill the gaps in TEW campaign or as
one-offs to be scattered through another campaign.
- The adventures were too dissimilar to fold into a coherent campaign and the
  attempt was feeble at best

Warhammer Companion Flame **
Compilation of adventure ideas and new rules - including Medical Treatment
Tables, armour breaking and magical arrows
- Very hodge-podge
- The three adventures were not bad (HS), boring (BiB) and quite good (WaLHFMF)
- Probably the best and most useful of the Flame products

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Character Sheets GW/Flame
There are several different versions of this product. Some of them have an
additional booklet describing an inn, or provide a system for generating a
social background for your characters.
- Excellent sheets

Related products, useful for WFRP
=================================

Realm of Chaos, Slaves to Darkness
This is the first book of the Realm of Chaos books (the other book being
The Lost and the Damned). It describes the two chaos gods Khorne and Slaanesh,
how to become a champion of chaos, chaos spawn, chaos weapons and magic objects.
If you want to run a campaign with chaos champions as characters, this book
is for you.

GW Floorplans
These were available in the forms of various products and editions. The oldest
sets are boxed sets, which also included some sort of short scenarios.

Citadel Miniatures
The recent ranges of Citadel miniatures are hardly useable for WFRP.
However, the
older models are excellent. There used to be various ranges of townspeople,
city guards, monsters, etc... In fact, Shadows over Bogenhafen had its
own range of specially designed miniatures.

Warhammer Novels
GW has published several novels situated in the Old World. Quality is variable.
   Storm Warriors
   Konrad
Shadowbreed (part 2 of the Konrad trilogy)
Warblade (part 3 of the Konrad trilogy)
   Plague Demon
   Ignorant Armies
   Red Thirst
   Drachenfels
   Zaragoz
   Wolf Riders
   Beasts in Velvet
   Genevieve Undead
